Bromont World Cup Report

The Women's race has started. Alison Sydor, in her usual style, went to the start from the gun. Leboucher is right on her wheel, with Pezzo and Dunlap just behind.

They will do a mini lap before heading out onto the main part of the course.

At the end of the mini lap Sydor is still in the lead, Laurence Leboucher behind her then Paola Pezzo, Alison Dunlap and Annabella Stropparo. Caroline Alexander is 8th, Chrissy Redden 12th and Sue Palmer 20th.

Other news. Alison Sydor will ride the Road Worlds in the Netherlands and so will Sue Palmer. Sue Palmer appealed her non-selection to the MTB Worlds team, but was turned down by the CCA selection committee. Sue has been ill most of the year, but is now healthy and ready to race.

End of lap 1
Alison Sydor is still in the lead, but Gunn-Rita Dahl moved up just before the wooded technical section and is just behind her. Then it is Leboucher at 23 seconds, Margarita Fullana at 1:07, Chantal Daucourt and Pezzo at 1:24. Chrissy Redden is 9th at 1:59, Leslie Tomlonson 16th, Melanie McQuaid 19th and Sue Palmer 25th.

End of short loop - lap 2

Clarification on course. One lap is a small short loop and then the riders pass by the start/finish again and do a larger loop.

At the start of the 2nd lap Sydor and Dahl are still together, Leboucher is still sitting at 23 seconds. Fullana and Pezzo are at 1:31, Daucourt at 1:47. Chrissy Redden is now with a group of 5 that contains Alexander abnd Epifanova. Melanie's McQuaid and Dorian are together in 20th, Tomlinson in 25th and Palmer 30th.

End of lap 2

Sydor and Dahl are still together and are extending their lead over the rest of the field. Pezzo and Fullana are at 1:50, Chrissy Redden has dropped the group she was with and is looking comfortable in 10 at 3:51. Leslie Tomlinson has moved back up to 16th and the two Melanies are at 19 and 20.

Part way through lap 3 no change in the order, except that it appears that Chrissy Redden has had a problem. Maybe a mechanical?

Starting the last lap

Dahl has a 7 second lead on Sydor. Then it is Leboucher at 1:11, Pezzo and Fullana at 2:31, Daucourt at 3:32. Mary Grigson has caught Dunlap and is at 4:33. No sign of Chrissy Redden.

Part way through the last lap

The riders have now finished the short loop and are setting out onto the large loop before the finish. Gun-Rita Dahl is looking strong and has put 35 seconds between herself and Alison Sydor. Then it is Laurence Leboucher at 1:38.

Alison Sydor said that her goal today was to finish well, but to be careful. "Gunn-rita is such a phenomenal descender, I did not try to stay with her."

Gunn-rita said Alison did all the work on the first 3 laps, but she observed that Alison was taking it easy on the descents, so this was where she could get away from her. Laurence Leboucher just felt that finishing was the most important thing today. The course was a bit too technical for her.

Women‚s World Cup Final, Bromont, Québec

„Thanks for the ride!‰ These were the first words of winner Gunn-Rita Dahle (American Eagle) to second place finisher Alison Sydor (Volvo-Cannondale) after their World Cup Final race in Bromont, Québec. Sydor set a torrid pace for the first three laps of the four lap race, hoping to gap the only rider capable of overtaking her in the final standings - Laurence Leboucher (Peugeot La Poste). „I was being cautious everywhere on the descents. It would have been nice to win, but the important thing was the overall.‰ Sydor‚s strategy worked, giving the Canadian her third World Cup title.

For the first three-quarters of the race, Sydor was shadowed by Dahle, as the twosome quickly dropped the rest of the field. Leboucher established a solid lock on third place, but dropped further back at every time check, eventually finishing over two and a half minutes back, and second in the World Cup final standings. Dahle made her move at the end of the third lap, after noting Sydor‚s caution on the descents. Initially, the gap hovered around 25 to 30 seconds, but in the final few kilometres the Norwegian opened it up to post a strong finish that makes her an early favourite for the World Championships in two weeks time. Dahle‚s result, however, left her one point shy of bumping Paola Pezzo (Gary Fisher) out of third spot in the final World Cup standings.

Behind the front trio, Margarita Fullana (Mt Dew/Specialized) and Pezzo played a cat-and-mouse game, with Fullana constantly dropping Pezzo on the climbs, only to have Italian catch back on during the descents. In the final two kilometre Fullana made a last successful effort to ditch Pezzo, taking fourth place, and overtaking Chantal Daucourt (Trek/VW) for fifth place in the final World Cup standings.

Killington Womens Stage 3 update

Linda Jackson (Saeco-Timex) won the 3rd stage at Killington Stage Race by almost ten minutes over Marie Holyer. Jackson's teammate Gana Roberge was in a two-woman break until the first real climb when Jackson bridged up, kicked it into gear and basically bid "Adieu" to the peloton. She slowly increased her lead, taking Sprint and QOM points as she went. Jackson retains the leaders jersey and also holds the Sprints and QOM jerseys as well.
