'06 BC Summer Games - Coaches Get Involved!

Cycling BC is seeking certified level 2 coaches for the upcoming '06 Kamloops BC Summer Games. The Games, held July 27th through to the 30th, cater to kids aged 15 and 16 (as of December 31, '06), and feature a road race, time trial and cross-country mountain bike race. Each Zone Team consists of eight athletes; four female, four male.
Responsibilities of the Zone Coach include promoting the Games within the designated Zone, selecting and preparing athletes, and traveling to and from the Games. Transportation, accommodations, and food is provided by the Games Society.
For the first time ever, Cycling BC is happy to offer honorariums to qualified Zone Coaches. Certified Level 2 coaches will receive $75 per day, while Level 3 coaches are entitled to $100 per day, over the 3 days of Games competition. Aspiring Level 1 coaches wishing to upgrade their certification levels and act as Zone coaches are entitled to FREE NCCP programming.

Zone Coaches are required from all corners of the province, according to the Provincial Zone breakdown described below.
Kootenays (Zone 1/Yellow)
Regional Districts of Central Kootenay, East Kootenay, Kootenay Boundary and Electoral Area A of Columbia-Shuswap Regional District, and including major centres: Castlegar, Cranbrook, Creston, Fernie, Golden, Grand Forks, Kimberley, Nelson, Radium, Rossland, and Trail.
Thompson-Okanagan (Zone 2/Red)
Regional Districts of Central Okanagan, Columbia-Shuswap (excluding Electoral Area A), North Okanagan, Okanagan-Similkameen, Thompson-Nicola, Electoral Areas A and B of the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District, and including major centres: Armstrong, Ashcroft, Enderby, Kamloops, Kelowna, Lillooet, Merritt, Peachland, Penticton, Revelstoke, Salmon Arm, Summerland, Vernon, and Westbank.
Fraser Valley (Zone 3/Light Blue)
Regional Districts of Central Fraser Valley, Dewdney Alouette, Fraser-Cheam, and including major centres: Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Coquitlam, Hope, Langley, Maple Ridge, Mission, Pitt Meadows, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Surrey, and White Rock.
Fraser River-Delta (Zone 4/Orange)
The City of Burnaby, the District of Delta, the City of New Westminster, and the City of Richmond.
Vancouver-Squamish (Zone 5/Dark Green)
The Regional Districts of Squamish-Lillooet (excluding Electoral Areas A and B), Sunshine Coast, Electoral Areas A, B, and C of the Greater Vancouver Regional District, the Village of Lions Bay, the Corporations of the Districts of North and West Vancouver, the City of North Vancouver, and the City of Vancouver.
Vancouver Island-Central Coast (Zone 6/Light Green)
The Regional Districts of Alberni-Clayoquot, Capital, Central Coast, Comox-Strathcona, Cowichan Valley, Mount Waddington, Nanaimo, Powell River, and including major centres: Campbell River, Comox, Courtenay, Cumberland, Duncan, Esquimalt, Ladysmith, Nanaimo, North Cowichan, Oak Bay, Ocean Falls, Port Alberni, Port Hardy, Powell River, Saanich, Sayward, Sidney, and Victoria.
North West (Zone 7/Purple)
The Regional Districts of Bulkley-Nechako, Kitimat-Stikine Region, and including major centres Burns Lake, Fort St. James, Houston, Kitimat, Masset, Port Clements, Prince Rupert, Smithers, Stewart, Terrace, and Vanderhoof.
Cariboo-North East (Zone 8/Dark Blue)
The Regional Districts of Cariboo, Fraser-Fort George, Peace River-Liaird, and including major centres Chetwynd, Dawson Creek, Fort Nelson, Fort St. John, Hudson Hope, Prince George, Quesnel, Tumbler Ridge, and Williams Lake.
National Coaching Certification Fall Schedule

NCCP Level 1 Road
Dates: October 8 & 9
Instructor: Steve Lund
Location: Sport BC, Vancouver
Cost: $150
Prerequisite: Theory 1
Level 1 Road: Each Clinic covers a wide variety of topics to get you ready to develop programs for a wide variety of athletes. Course contents include:
* The role and responsibilities of the coach
* An overview of all road events including rules and regulations
* A look at specialized race equipment
* Basic maintenance
* Bike set-up (positioning)
* Riding skills (drafting, echelon, pack riding, cornering, climbing, sprinting and braking)
* Basic tactics and strategy
* Diet and race feeding
* Training - developing a yearly plan
* Health and injury
NCCP Level 2 Road
Dates: October 22 & 23
Instructor: Steve Lund
Location: Sport BC, Vancouver
Cost: $150
Prerequisite: Theory 1, Theory 2, Road 1
Level 2 Road: A continuation of the Level 1 Road course, Level 2 participants can look forward to developing their knowledge in road racing, and being able to better service all levels of athletes. Course contents includes:
* Preparing a team budget
* Principles of rider selection
* Race support (pre/during/post)
* Rules and regulations (Road/Track)
* Demands of specific events (Track/Road Race, TT, TTT, Criterium)
* Training principles and energy systems
* Determining the intensity of training
* Training methods and techniques
* Yearly training program design
* Skills, tactics and strategies used in road events
* Nutrition (pre/during/post)
* Reducing injuries
NCCP Level 1 MTB
Dates: November 5 & 6
Instructor: Steve Lund
Location: Sport BC, Vancouver
Cost: $150
Prerequisite: Theory 1
Level 1 MTB: Much like the Road Clinic, the MTB Level 1 course covers a wide variety of information. Participants can look forward to learning about:
* The role and responsibility of the coach
* An overview of MTB racing including rules and regulations
* Health, safety and prevention of injuries
* Equipment and clothing
* Training objectives
* Race tactics and strategy
* Planning a training session
* Teaching skills, skill progression and analysis
NCCP Level 2 MTB
Dates: November 26 & 27
Instructor: Steve Lund
Location: Sport BC, Vancouver
Cost: $150
Prerequisite: Theory 1, Theory 2, MTB 1
Level 2 MTB: Building on the knowledge gained at the MTB Level 1 course, participants further define their skills and knowledge, and are better able to accommodate coaching a wide variety of skilled riders. Level 2 content includes:
* Role of the coach, the club, and the team
* Preparing budgets
* Selection process
* Site venues
* Pre-race preparation
* Warm up process
* Post race support
* Safety considerations (injuries, emergencies, health considerations)
* Nutrition (pre/during/post)
* Hydration
* Race tactics
* Training athletes (key performance factors)
* Mental training
* Skill analysis
* Developing skills (switch backs, drops, technical climbs and descents, cornering, sprinting)
General Level 2 Methodology
Dates: December 10 & 11
Instructor: Steve Lund
Location: Sport BC, Vancouver

Prerequisite: Level 1 Certification (RD or MTB), Theory 2, RD or MTB Technical 2
General Level 2 Methodology: This non-discipline specific course incorporates energy system knowledge, and develops training programs using the latest technologies in training, including heart rate monitors and power meters. Course contents includes;
* Evolution of power output during various competitive cycling events
* Interval training and maximal aerobic power
* Aerobic endurance
* Anaerobic lactic capacity
* Speed, speed endurance, maximal alactic anaerobic power
* Developing a yearly training plan (planning, implementation, training, assessment)
* Factors effecting heart rate during exercise
* Using a heart rate monitor at various stages of training
* Evaluation of heart rates
* Training with power
