THEY NEARLY STAYED AWAY!
It was a lazy, hazy evening - dead calm and fairly humid. And five laps into event number 12 of the Midweek Club Series, the scratch group had made no impression on the threes et al. Who were really motoring. Eventually, Mark Hibbert (Jet Fuel) and Jeff Hansen (Neworld) eased off the front of the 1/2 pack and started chipping away at the handicap group's 90 second lead.
Soon afterward, wunderkind - Peter Mazur, making a welcome return to the series, and Woodbridge Italia's Brent Arthurs split from the group in pursuit of Hansen and Hibbert while the rest of the elite riders did nothing. Mazur did the lion's share of the work and eventually Brent eased up and coasted back to the main bunch, with Peter coming back soon afterwards. As he passed the start line, Arthurs groaned, „The kid's not human!‰.
Meanwhile, overall points leader, Greg Cavanagh (Woodstock) and second placed Heath Cockburn (Jet Fuel) sat in the middle of the peleton watching each other.
With five laps remaining the handicap group still had 30 seconds lead on the 1/2's with only Hibbert and Hansen managing to bridge. But then the chasers decided enough was enough and, with two laps to go, the two bunches joined. Hibbert had managed to break yet again, with Jeff Hansen chasing but in the last lap dash, Hansen was caught and Mark just managed to stay 6 seconds off the front of the rushing pack to take top honours.
The bunch sprint for second was won by Mississauga's Piers Davidge from Greg Cavanagh, who had slyly moved up through the field and away from Cockburn. The ten points for third place gave Greg a significant lead over Heath, with a twelve point advantage. Brent Arthurs is now in third place, a further twelve points behind.
With eight events left in the series, it's still possible for any one of a number of riders to win the $1,000 aluminum frame donated by Pavan Cycles and the next few weeks should prove to be very interesting.
Thanks to Joannie Verschuuren for an excellent marshalling job and to Mrs. Graham for collecting cones.
