RAIN DON'T STOP PLAY! (courtesy Peter McCaffery)
This Monday's Mississauga Midweek Club Novice Criterium was well-attended despite the steady rain. The format was the same as last week, with three experienced riders each leading a team of novices. Ben Ayson and Chris Atkins (Mississauga B.C.) and Independent Brian Turner, who is a graduate of the novice series, lead rival groups. The object was to keep as many of the group together as possible.
For the first five laps everyone stayed together and there were some good examples of echelon riding, with everyone exercising caution in the slick conditions.
By lap six, a lead group of five had established a twenty second lead and held onto it for the next four laps. By lap eleven, the majority of the competitors were back together, including minime, Ryan De Boer, who had been paced back to the chasing group by Brian Turner.
In the closing laps, another break formed and quickly took over a minute out of the chase pack, which managed to stay intact.
At the line, it was Bill Konstntinou, last wek's winner, who easily out-sprinted Chris Atkins and veteran Drew Harvie to take the flag. Mississauga's General Leung was fourth, followed in by newcomer, Peter Sherr.
