Hamilton Road Worlds Update

Mountain Bike World Cup 2004
There has been lots of speculation regarding the Mountain Bike World Cup for next year. Normally the schedule for the next year is announced at the world championships. This year, there was no announcement in Lugano, and the UCI said that the schedule would be announced after the Management Meeting in Hamilton.
Well, the Management meetings were held in hamilton, and a number of announcements were made, including the sites for future world championships. We published these dates on October 12th, but here they are again:
MTB Marathon 2004: Bad Goisern (AUT)
Indoor Cycling 2005: Freiburg (GER)
Track-Road Junior 2005: Vienna (AUT)
MTB 2006: Rotorua (NZ)
Road 2006: Salzburg (AUT)
Indoor Cycling 2006: Chemnitz (GER)
What was NOT announced was the off road world cup schedule for next year. We confirmed with the UCI that this announcement has been postponed again. On Sunday (October 12th) we were told "in two weeks". The reason is lack of financial guarantees to meet the requirements of the UCI.
We published a tentative schedule during the mountain bike Worlds, about a month ago, as follows:
- May 22-23 - Madrid, Spain, XC only
- May 29-30 - Houffalize, Belgium, XC only
- June 5-6 - Fort William, Scotland, XC / DH / 4X
- June 12-13 - European location, DH / 4X only
- June 26-27 - Mont Ste Anne, Quebec, XC / DH / 4X
- July 3-4 - Calgary, Alberta, XC / DH / 4X
- July 10-11 - Grouse Mtn, BC or Brazil, XC / DH / 4X
- July 18 - National Championships
- August 1 - Continental Champions hips
- September 9-12 - World Championships in Les Gets, France
- September 18-19 - Kaprun, Austria, XC / DH / 4X
As far as we have been able to determine, the current situation is as follows:
- Fort William and Mont Ste Anne have met requirements.
- Grouse is unlikely, since the organizer feels that they do not have the time to prepare at this late date.
- Daniel Baal, UCI Mountain Bike President, is pushing for a European location rather than Brazil, however, there is still a lot of interest in having the first ever South American World Cup.
- Kaprun will not be the World Cup Final (the organizers themselves said to me that they are more interested in going in the direction of marathon events than World Cups).
- Madrid, Houffalize and Calgary still have to satisfy UCI requirements, but are likely to do so.
L'état de santé de Kevin Lacombe n'inspire plus d'inquiétudes
Montréal, le 14 octobre 2003 (Sportcom) - Kevin Lacombe, victime d'une violente chute survenue samedi dernier alors qu'il dévalait une descente à plus de 60 km/h à la course sur route junior des championnats du monde de cyclisme, est rentré chez lui, lundi, à Amos. En entrevue mardi soir, Lacombe semblait bien remis de son accident qui, selon plusieurs, aurait pu être fatal s'il n'avait pas porté de casque.
" J'ai encore quelques maux de tête à cause de ma commotion cérébrale, mais pour le reste, ça va. Je m'en viens pas pire ", a indiqué celui qui s'en tire avec une fracture à l'arcade sourcilière droite. " À partir du moment où j'ai freiné, je ne me souviens plus de rien. Je n'ai pas encore visionné mon accident à la télé et ça ne me dérangerait pas de le voir. C'est une chute comme une autre ", a poursuivi celui qui a été inconscient pendant près de 24 heures.
Lacombe se donne un peu de temps avant de rechausser les patins et rejoindre les Voltigeurs de Drummondville de la LHJMQ, où il évolue à titre de défenseur. " Dès que je n'aurai plus de maux de tête je vais recommencer à patiner dans une semaine ou deux ", a-t-il conclu en assurant qu'on le retrouverait sur un vélo le printemps prochain.
Briefly, Kevin Lacombe returned home to Amos, Quebec Monday after his horrific crash in the Junior Men's road race. He still has headaches, but is recovering well, and will rejoin his Drummondville hockey team as asoon as he is fit. He also said that he will be back on the bike next spring.
