Grand Prix Féminin de Cyclisme Returns

It appears that the GP Féminin stage race will return for 2003, after its last minute cancellation this year. The race was supposed to take place in late September of 2002, with the first week in Quebec and the second in France, as a final tune-up for the Worlds. Unfortunately, funding collapsed and the event was cancelled.

The CCA still holds a sanction for the event, and is anxious to have it take place, particularly with the Worlds in Hamilton. We understand that two organizers have been approached: Roger Fillion, former organizer of the Tour Lac St-Jean-Saguenay, and Daniel Manibal, organizer of the Montreal Women's World Cup and Tour of Greater Montreal.

Fillion has been given first right of refusal, and is said to have tentatively agreed to put on the event - subject to regional and provincial support. If Fillion does organize the event, it will take place in the Saguenay region, September 24-28. Otherwise, Manibal's group will put it on in Quebec City.


Moninger Receives Provisional Suspension

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Dec. 12, 2002) - The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) announced Thursday that Scott Moninger of Boulder, Colo., an athlete in the sport of cycling, tested positive at a road cycling competition in Breckenridge, Colo. on Aug. 10, 2002.

He tested positive for the use of 19-norandrosterone, a prohibited substance under the Union Cycliste International (UCI) rules. UCI is the international federation for cycling.

Moninger, 36, accepted a provisional suspension pending the outcome of his challenge of the positive drug test before an American Arbitration Association (AAA)/North American Court of Arbitration for Sport arbitration panel. By agreeing to the provisional suspension, Moninger would be given credit for the period of time he served the provisional suspension, beginning on Oct. 6, 2002, should a doping violation be determined at the arbitration hearing, and he receives a suspension. According to UCI rules, if Moninger did not accept the provisional sanction, his suspension would begin on the date following the decision of the arbitration panel.

USADA is the independent anti-doping agency for Olympic sports in the United States, and is responsible for managing the testing and adjudication process for U.S. Olympic, Pan Am and Paralympic athletes. USADA is equally dedicated to preserving the integrity of sport through research initiatives and educational programs.

In the 6 days from July 28th-August 02, 2003, 250 Riders & Crew will embark on a groundbreaking journey. With their sights set on raising thousands of dollars for the Toronto PWA Foundation, our team of courageous men and women will be pedaling over 100km a day through the scenic shores of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. Our crew of able volunteers will be providing sumptuous nutritious meals, ample snack breaks, camping along beautiful lakes and rivers, evening activities and entertainment and we will arrive in Montreal just in time for Divers-Cité gay pride celebrations!

The Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS) is seeking a skilled and highly motivated individual to fill the position of Executive Director. Former Tour du St-Laurent Stage Winner Dies

Arthur Metcalfe, former British pro and Tour du St-Laurent double stage winner (1964), passed away on Wednesday, December 11th, from cancer. Metcalfe also won the Milk Race, British national title and competed in two Tours.
