Team Sponsorship News

Pinarello Steps Up Sponsorship in 2003

Bike manufacturer Pinarello will step up its sponsorship next season, adding Danish team EDS-fakta and new Russian team Lokomotiv (former Itera) to its roster.

The Italian company already sponsors high-profile teams such as Fassa Bortolo, Team Telekom and iBanesto.com, but needed another team to market their new brand, Opera.

"The Northern European market is one of the most important in the world, EDS-fakta is a very serious team and we expect them to help us develop the Opera brand and frame for us," said managing director Fausto Pinarello.

Pinarello explained at the EDS fakta team launch in Denmark on Thursday that he chose the second division team instead of the bigger team CSC-Tiscali team because Pinarello didn't need another high-profile team. "And with the biggest stars it's also much more dangerous if something goes wrong," said Pinarello.

Apart from the two-year deal providing bikes and other gear for this year's top team in the UCI's second division, the manufacturer is also considering stepping in as name-sponsor together with fakta. "We're in talks about buying the other team name because it's important for us to market this new brand and we expect to have something decided by the beginning of November, although normally we prefer to stay off the jerseys," said Pinarello.

CSC-Tiscali Choses Giordana

Gita North, Canada announced today that Team CSC-Tiscali from Denmark has selected Giordana Cycling Apparel for the upcoming season.
