Raid Pierre Harvey Cancelled
Organizers of the Raid Pierre Harvey have announced that they have cancelled the 10 year old UCI sanctioned event due to lack of sponsorship. The three day off-road enduro covers 285 kilometres between Chicoutimi and Lac Beaupré, on the outskirts of Quebec City. The event was scheduled for August 16-18 this year.
The Raid has struggled in recent years, balancing the philosophy of a pure point-to-point event with the desire to attract both pro racers and recreational riders. The organizers have added shortened circuit-type stages for the racers, and a one day event for recreational riders. However, the competition for sponsorship has increased drastically in recent years, with GP Beauce, the Masters Worlds, GP Feminin, etc. siphoning off increasingly large amounts of money from both commercial and government sponsorship.
It is very unfortunate that we will lose this unique event. I attended the Raid twice, and both times I was impressed by the quality of the organization, the dedication of the organizers, the enthusiasm of the participants and the quality of the competition. The route was largely through a provincial conservation area - Reserve Faunique des Laurentides. It was stunning scenery and, for the sections I rode, tough.
RIP, Raid Pierre Harvey
Note: Pierre Harvey rode every year and lent his name to the event, but had no actual involvement in the event organization.
