This past weekend was the annual Tandem Stage Race in Montreal. Over the past year it has grown to attract an international field. There were tandems representing Spain, Swizerland, France, and of course the Canadians. The race was spread over 3 days with 4 stages in and around the beautiful Montreal.

Friday
AM Circuit race. 4KM letter d course. The winds were gusting and the weather was a bit chilly. From the gun the Swiss team attacked and we went with them only to be caught in the tailwind section of the course. The second attack came from the Spanish and that was the end of the race. They rode the whole race solo for the convincing victory. We missed making the chasing group of about 5 but sprinted well with the group we were in.

Saturday-Double Day

AM 15KM ITT on the slopes of Mont Royal. It was a 3KM roller coster ride. Up the hill Down the Hill-Up the hill Down the Hill. Again the Spanish took the gold Swiss Second and Pierre-Olivier Boily/Stephane Cote (CAN)Bronze. Gears finishing 9th.

PM 40KM Crit Finally the Sun shone and the winds were minimal compared to the past. There were sprint laps every 4,Cash for the first 3 on the line. This would make it difficult for a breakaway but we tried anyway. We broke clear 4times in the day with no one with us only to get swallowed half laps later. The podium was the same only Bronze was stood by Murry Solem/Gene Della Siega(CAN).

Sunday-50/40/30/25KM RR. Yes it started out as 50 but was shortened to 25KM after snow and very windy conditions. On the climb the usual suspects got away joined by the newly formed team of Chris Wood/Dave Johnston. The would stay away and the GC was as follows.Of special note:National Champions managed to place 3rd on GC with a front derailleur that was held on with zap straps.

Two new Canadian teams have shown they have what it takes to compete on the world scene. With BC's Solem/Della Siega's sprinting abilities(they grabbed a bunch of cash in the sprints) and Ontario's Wood/Johnston's Time Trialing and Climbing ability(4th ITT,3rdRR)

Team Canada will be traveling to Belgium to compete in a stage race May 6th.

Hughes signs with VW

Clara Hughes has signed to race with the Quebec-based Trek-VW squad. Hughes' primary focus will be the track this season, but, according to team director Josée Robitaille she will be making an appearance on the start line for selected races.
