Trinidad Report

Racing here in Trinidad has come to a close for another year.

Racing was not without a couple of serious crashes however, and one of these crashes involved Nicholas Corcoran of Calgary. Nick was involved in a crash with two other riders in the 2nd to last event of Saturday night's schedule. Nick and a rider from Trinidad ended up being taken to the local hospital. The Trinidad rider suffered 2 broken vertebrae in his neck, along with a broken collarbone. Nick suffered a pretty good knock on his head, and was unconscious for several minutes at the velodrome.

Nick still remains in the hospital (Monday evening) and will most likely be in for a couple more days under close watch of the doctors. Nick is doing well, and is enjoying the comforts of the hospital bed (which is two or three stars better than the accomodations his team mates are currently residing in here in Trinidad !! ).

The racing on Saturday and Sunday produced many good moments for our entire team. Unquestionably the star of our trip for the Canadian team was Travis Smith. Travis proved to be the most dominant rider of the category 1 field, and was awarded the most outstanding rider for the category 1 riders for the 3 week series !! Travis won the curtain event for the category 1 with a great sprint finish in the 15 lap event. Travis received fantastic support in this final race from Ryan McKenzie, and Chris Bentley. Chris went off the front for 8 laps in the event and was only caught in the last 1/2 lap!

Tyler, Lars and Steen competed in the international category for their first weekend in Trinidad. These 3 were joined by Glen Rendall. Several good finishes were posted by Steen Madsen who was the only Canadian who qualified for the sprint tournament (top 12 from the flying 200). Steen was eliminated in the 1/4 final round. Steen raced very well in all of the events over the weekend, continually working on his tactics, etc. for his upcoming World Cup event in Mexico. Glen also will be travelling to Mexico for the World Cup, and ended up his last weekend here in Trinidad with several top 5 results.

Tyler Hansen and Lars Madsen left this morning for Tobago for a criterium which will take place on Wednesday. Steen, Tyler, Lars and myself head to Barbados for the final weekend of racing here in the carribean on Wednesday afternoon. Travis, Ryan, Chris and Joel will return to Canada on Wednesday morning as well. As of now, I am unsure of when Nick will return to Canada but I will definitely update you all with information as soon as it comes !

Cycle Swap

The Waterloo Cycling Club proudly plugs its first annual "Swap Your Swag" bike swap on April 6th at Bingeman Park. Intended as a vehicle (ahem) for raising funds, the Swag Swap is like a garage sale with nothing but bike stuff!

We're sure that EVERY cyclist has some cycling gear - bikes, parts, accessories, clothes - that you need to buy, sell or trade. This is your opportunity to meet many like-minded people bent on buying and selling the bike parts we all so desperately want and need.

Here's how it works: If you have something that you want to sell, all you need to do is come down to the site early (before the 9am start) on April 6th to claim your space to sell your stuff. Entry fee for sellers is $5 (cheap, like Mad magazine). If you don't have anything to sell then just c'mon down and browse, meander, lurk, skulk, loiter and buy all kinds of great cycling stuff. Entry fee for lurkers and buyers is $2. All proceeds fund WCC programs.

In addition to everycyclist's junk boxes, we'll show new stuff too - local retailers will "pedal" their wares.

Tunes, videos, and door prizes will help complete the all-bike atmosphere. I bet it will even smell like ... well, never mind.

The "Classic" Returns, Year 4:
This is a European style road race in the tradition of Liege-Bastogne-Liege. The leg out to Seabeck is fairly flat while the return to Tahuya is challenging. The course is a scenic, fun and rolling 65 mile loop that is to be completed one time only by all categories. This course will definitely remind you of the Spring Belgian Classics. There are several significant climbs (39x23 recommended) that will be marked along the course. Be a part of the best race in the northwest as voted by you!
