Primavera Rosa - Women's World Cup #3: March 23 (Italy)

Saturn Women raced the third stop of the World Cup Series in Italy Saturday. Saturn's Petra Rossner came into the race leading the Series after having won the first two events in Australia and New Zealand earlier this month. Due to scheduling conflicts with the Sea Otter Classic, Rossner had only three teammates to support her. Catherine Marsal, Kristy Scrymgeour and Ina Teutenberg all joined Rossner for La Primavera Rosa.
Held for the fourth year, the race started in Varezze and followed exactly the same route as the final 118 kilometers of the men's race World Cup held the same day (Milan San Remo), including the infamous climbs of the Capo Cervo, Capo Berta, Cipressa and the Poggio, this World Cup was certainly a challenge for the under gunned Saturn Team. Farm Frites' Mirjam Melchers, having finished second in the World Cup Series in 2001, was keen on winning one of the events, and making her bid for the Rainbow Jersey. However, with outstanding support from her teammates, Rossner arrived in the front group to the final 1 kilometer marker. In the most unfortunate of circumstances a crash brought her down, rendering her unable to finish the race. Up the road, Melchers took the win over Diana Ziluite. Rossner, however, still leads the World Cup Series by 22 points.
