Report From Trinidad

Hello all,
The team has finished its first weekend of racing here in Trinidad, West Indies. The Southern Games (Saturday and Sunday), on the grass track were our first experience of the wild and crazy racing here in the Carribean.
Glen Rendall (Ottawa) and Ryan McKenzie (Calgary) raced international class. Ryan finished all races in the bunch, and Glen was very succesful over the first two days winning two medals. (2nd and 3rd places). Travis Smith (Calgary) and Joel Regimbald (Calgary) won two medals each in the Category 1 events over the two days of competition. Travis placed 1st in two events, with Joel placing 2nd and 3rd. Chris Bentley (Calgary) and Nick Corcoran (Calgary) also fared well in the opening weekend. Chris found a bit of either heat stroke, or problems with food/water on Sunday and spent the day in bed. He is doing well today, recovered from the day off yesterday.
The weather has been nice, raining quite a bit however. The guys rode to the track yesterday (50 KM ride) in the early afternoon. The temperature on the road was 37 degrees Celcius!
This week features a criterium on Wednesday, and then 3 days of racing this weekend. The international field this year features 12 countries, with 26 athletes. Most succesful athlete over the opening weekend was Jeff Hopkins (Australia). Jeff was the 1999 Junior World 1000 Meter Champion. He won 5 of 6 events this weekend and established himself as the rider to beat over the 4 week series.
This Trinidad event continues to serve as a fantastic spring time training and racing opportunity for Canadian Track Cyclists. The racing is fast, very tactical and often rough and aggressive. Many former world champions have used this event as their season opening preparation. The Canadian Team will continue to use this event to push our athletes towards world class standards as we lead up to the Athens Olympics in 2004.
If other riders would like to learn more about the racing and training opportunities available in Trinidad, West Indies please contact Kurt Innes (Canadian National Team Coach - innes@ucalgary.ca).
