The day began poorly for the Navigators squad with a 7:30am call from the States informing me that Kirk O'Bee had suffered a broken collar bone in the Athens Twilight Criterium just hours before (results below - Ed.). O'Bee, who was scheduled to join his teammates in Europe on Monday, will be seriously missed at the team's Belgium debut. For the first time since the start of the race, the temperature was warming slightly, and the sun was struggling to assert it's presence, and the starting town of St-Marie-Aux-Chenes was dry. Voila, no rain!

After yesterday's aggression, most of the riders expected a gentle start, especially since the previous day's aggressors - Francaise des Jeux and Jean Delatour - had suffered the greatest losses. The stage was to finish with three climbs in succession. A cat 1 followed by two cat 2s and a 12 kilometres run into the region's largest city (Metz) would certainly be the deciding points of the race. However, someone forgot to tell Collstrop. An opening attack had the peloton in the gutter for the first 10 kilometres, and when Delatour's Eddy Seigneur counter attacked and gained 30 seconds, the field stretched out even further. Already guys were dropping when Seignuer was caught at 35 kilometres. The pace finally slowed, and Collstrop's Erwin Thijs went clear with Vlaanderen's Kris Gertitisand A.V.C.Aixois's Nicolas Boulenger. The defending Panaria team liked this, as Gertitis was the closest challenger at 4:48. The Italian team went to the front and rode a moderate tempo assisted by the Italian Sintofarm Team, and 3rd placed Chris Newton's Great Britain team. The gap was held at 2:00 minutes for the next 100 kilometres as the group prepared for the inevitable assaults on the finishing climbs, which began at 140 kilometres.

As the group approached the first climb, Boulenger was coming back and Gertitis was in trouble. Panaria controlled the pace and discouraged any attacks, and as they crested the KOM, Thijs was alone at 1:30. A quick descent proved the chase was on in earnest, and the gap was closing rapidly. As the peloton reached the steepest section of the second climb, the attacks began. Immediately the field was whittled, as second placed Sassone fired a hard attack covered by Panaria's KOM leader O'Neill. Navigators' Chris Baldwin bridged with three others, and the break was six. With Newton and Matveyev behind, the chasers kept the gap close, and regrouped on the descent. Continued volleys on the third and final climb had the race leader in trouble, but he would not surrender, and the group was 35 as it sped down the hill into Metz.

At 5 kilometres to go, Delatour's Seigneur finished where he began with a ferocious attack that gained 10 seconds, but the gradually sloping approach of the last three kilometres slowed the escapee, and the French team leader was absorbed. A field sprint was inevitable and Baldwin positioned teammate Vassili Davidenko and then moved aside to protect his GC position and stay out of trouble. As the group passed the three hundred meters to go mark at over 40 miles/hr, a race official stepped into the road, clipping race leader Matveyev who crashed violently taking Baldwin with him. Davidenko's sprint was interrupted, but he recovered and placed 3rd as Newton took the stage with Italian sprinter Antonio Palumbo second. Matveyev and Baldwin received the same time although Chris's certain top-ten stage finish was aborted.

GC was again affected dramatically today as Newton moved into second followed by Sassone, Kasputis and Schnider. Baldwin moved up a spot to 11th. If post race reports are true, Matveyev suffered a broken collarbone and will not start Monday's 6th stage, moving Newton into the lead, and Baldwin into the top ten.

Aprèa Un Début de Saison Incertain

(DIAPO) - Dominique Perras termine 7e au Tour de Berne (UCI 1.4) et est couronné "Coureur le plus combatif du jour"

Dimanche, 29 avril 2001 (Berne, Suisse) À force de persévérance et après plusieurs mois d'incertitude au sujet de sa carrière dans le cyclisme professionnel, Dominique Perras réussit à briller en Suisse lors de la 78e édition du Tour de Berne, une course de sanction internationale 1.4 (UCI).

Dominique Perras, 27 ans et membre de l'équipe suisse de 3e division Ficonsels-RCC Assurances, a remporté une précieuse 7e position en plus de se mériter le titre de "l'animateur de la journée'' (coureur le plus combatif) grâce à sa détermination. " Je me sentais très bien aujourd'hui, et étais de toutes les échappées Dans la dernière ascension du jour, je me suis immiscé dans l'échappée gagnante de 18 coureurs. De ce groupe, je me suis extirpé avec un Suisse et un Italien à 15 km de l'arrivée. Nous avons été repris que près de l'arrivée par le reste du petit groupe. Terminé 7e au sprint de notre groupe dans ces conditions, ce n'est pas trop mal car je ne suis généralement pas super au sprint. Je me suis entraîné tout l'hiver et ca commence a payer. Je me sens de mieux en mieux de semaines en semaines et je suis très motivé pour le reste de la saison. " a déclaré Perras.

Il est à rappeler qu'après avoir séjourné une année entière avec l'équipe suisse Phonak Hearing Systems, Dominique Perras a été embauché par l'équipe américaine Noble House. À la suite d'un manque de liquidité et d'une mauvaise planification financière, Noble House n'a jamais pu tenir ses promesses auprès des coureurs qu'elle avait embauchés. Il en a alors résulté une saison presque ratée pour plusieurs coureurs dont les Québécois Dominique Perras et Alexandre Lavallée. Ces derniers ont même dû se résoudre à vendre à rabais leurs services de coureurs auprès d'équipes américaines en début de saison uniquement pour conserver le privilège de courir parmi les meilleurs. C'est ce qui a motivé Dominique à retourner en Suisse.

Dominique Perras quitte la Suisse lundi matin pour aller participer à 3 courses d'un jour en Pologne (1er, 3 et 5 mai), suivi d'une course en Autriche. Finalement, Dominique Perras terminera le mois avec le Tour d'Irlande du 20 au 27 mai (2.5). En Juin, il reviendra au Canada pour prendre part au GP de Beauce avec son équipe Suisse.

Charles Dionne tanné des troisièmes places

Athens, Georgie (DIAPO) - Charles Dionne, de St-Rédempteur, a terminé au 3e rang du critérium Xcelerate Twilight 2001, présenté dimanche, à Athens (Georgie). Vendredi, il avait terminé au 15e rang du premier critérium; samedi, travaillant pour ses coéquipiers, il avait mérité le 8e rang.

" Je suis content de ma course, mais... Des podiums c'est l'fun, mais une victoire ce serait mieux. J'ai été agressif aujourd'hui et je crois que j'aurais pu gagner ", a indiqué Dionne, troisième d'étape à quelques reprises depuis le début de sa saison aux États-Unis. " Vendredi, j'ai connu une course moyenne et samedi, c'était fou! Un parcours très étroit avec 180 coureurs, c'est un peu malade. Il y a eu plusieurs chutes. Un groupe de sept coureurs, incluant deux de mes coéquipiers, s'est échappé. J'ai travaillé pour eux dans le peloton et j'ai terminé au premier rang du groupe. "
