We are sorry to report the passing of Jim Davies of Burnaby, BC, last month at the age of 86. Davies was a member of the Canadian cycling team for the 1956 Olympic Games (Melbourne, Australia) and the British Empire Games in Vancouver, in 1954. Jim started his bicycle racing career at the young age of fifteen, racing throughout the Pacific Northwest, winning Provincial and National titles both on the road and in the velodrome. He was also the owner of the Jubilee Cycle bike shop, which is now run by his son Neil, and in it's 74th year of operation (owned by the Davies family since 1974).
The Davies' family involvement in cycling spans four generations; his uncle - also named Jim Davies - was a member of the 1928 Olympic cycling squad in Amsterdam, competing on the track in the Sprint and Team Pursuit, where the team finished fifth. His grandson Tyler Davies was a member of the 2016 Cadet national Team Sprint squad and was a member of the 2018 squad that set a Junior national record in the Team Sprint.
Davies continued to ride throughout his life, despite breaking his hip in an accident with a pickup truck while riding.
A 45 kilometre Celebration of Life ride will be held on August 3rd at 10:00 am, leaving from Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver. Participants should meet in the parking lot off 37th, near Mackie.
Updates on the Ride can be found Here.
