Peter Disera (Norco Factory) had the best World Cup race of his career on Sunday in Les Gets, France, finishing just off the podium in sixth place after riding with the leaders for most of the race. Nino Schurter (Scott-SRAM), with a last lap attack, scored the 32nd career World Cup victory of his career, moving to within one win of Julien Absalon's all time record.

The race proved to be tactical, with a select group forming at the front on the first lap. Dry, dusty and hot conditions at 1200 metres of altitude on a circuit with lots of climbing seemed to make riders cautious from attacking too early.
A group formed containing Schurter, Gerhard Kerschbaumer (Torpado Ursus), Henrique Avancini (Cannondale Factory), Stephane Tempier (Bianchi Countervail), Ondrej Cink (Kross Racing), Jordan Sarrou (Absolite-Absalon), David Valero (MMR Factory) and Disera. Significantly, World Cup number 2 ranked Mathieu van der Poel (Corendon-Circus) did not make the lead group and seemed to been struggling from the start, dropping as low as 45th before finally recovering slightly in the last two laps to finish 16th.

Avancini and Kerschbaumer did most of the work on the climbs, with Schurter content to follow. Cink attacked on the fifth lap, splitting the group, with only Schurter, Avancini, Kerschbaumer and Tempier able to stay with him. Kerschbaumer surged the next lap, dropping Tempier, and on the penultimate seventh lap Schurter went to the front for the first time, dropping everyone but Kerschbaumer. He attacked again just before the start of the final lap, but Kerschbaumer clawed his way back, so Schurter backed off until the final climb of the race, and this time Kerschbaumer could not respond to Schurter's attack. Avancini held on for third, just ahead of Tempier, who outsprinted Cink.

"It was a tough race, a tough course, very physical," said Schurter, who won his first world title in Les Gets as a Junior back in 2004. "Gerhard was super strong, and I was a bit surprised when I dropped him on the second last lap. That gave me confidence that I was the strongest today. On a physical track like this it is hard to get gaps, so for a long time it was an open race. Today was a big step towards the overall title."
Disera joined the leaders on the second lap. He was unable to respond to the surges on the climbs, but steadily rode his way back each time until the fifth lap. Riding alone in seventh behind Sarrou, he caught the Frenchman on the seventh lap and closed to within 11 seconds of the final podium spot before losing a few seconds in the final lap. Other Canadians struggled, with Andrew L'Esperance (Norco Factory) the only other one to finish on the same lap, in 60th. Marc-Andre Fortier (Pivot Cycles-OTE) was 78th, Raphael Gagne (Team Canada) 92nd and Leandre Bouchard (Pivot Cycles-OTE) 107th.
"What a rad day. Just wild," said Disera. "I was apprehensive going into this race for a few reasons. I had selected to race my Revolver HT [hardtail] this weekend, since the course was a climbing course with minimal features. However, come short track day most of the men were on FS's [full suspension], so that kind of threw me off. Reassuring was Sean after his stellar ride telling me that the HT climbs like a goat and the descents, however blown out, were just as fast. He wasn't wrong. Further, I just wasn't sure how the legs were going to be. The short track was good but I felt a little flat. I had been feeling good all week, like really good, and I was fearful I may have overdone it in prep."
"Regardless, when the gun went off and my second row start launched me into the mix things, were good. I fought very hard to make that front selection. I had good legs and didn't think twice about trying to get around guys. For a few laps I was hanging on, in the mix but not quite able to move up into it. I was comfortable on the back of the group, but also at my limit."
"I would get gapped off slightly at the top of the climb through the bumpy grass. There were some pitch changes so a yo-yo effect took place. I needed the juice then to make a move into the group and save me from tail-gunning, but I sure didn't have it at that time. After a few laps of descending all out and chasing on I was finally gapped off. Not at all deterred, since I wasn't the only one and I would continue to chase as hard as I could and slowly pick my way closer to the podium."
"That last lap was wild. Actually, the whole race was wild. To say that I attacked on the last lap is a lie. I attacked every lap. I attacked for survival in that group. I attacked on the second last lap to catch Sarrou. I attacked on the last lap with everything after being told that Tempier looked cracked. This, however, was not the case as he and Cink had an all out battle and I wasn't invited to the party."
"All in all, cannot complain. Had the ride of my life. Legs were great. Head was quiet and focused - completely autonomous execution. The podium would be cool but I'm 24 and we are only halfway through the World Cups!"
In the overall standings, Schurter now leads by 245 points, with Avancini moving into second ahead of van der Poel by 16 points. Mathias Fluckiger (Thomus RN) drops to fourth overall from second, after finishing ninth. Disera makes a big jump to tenth from 15th in the standings.
