Cyclists go on Strike in Toronto

When: November 30, 6:15 pm
Where: Intersection of College and Grace Photo Op: Cyclists will fill the street, and post enormous, poster-sized letters to Jean Chretien, Mike Harris and Mel Lastman.

Why: On November 15th, a cyclist was doored at this intersection and thrown under the wheels of a truck. He is currently in hospital undergoing multiple surgeries. It will take at least a year for him to walk again. This horrible incident could have happened to any cyclist riding on College Street.

Cyclists are going on strike to demand safe passage on College Street. Every level of government encourages cycling as a healthy and environmental mode of transport yet no governmental agency provides adequate funding or legislation to ensure the safety of those citizens who get on their bikes. On November 30th ARC (Advocacy for Respect for Cyclists) will symbolically post three gigantic letters to Jean Chretien, Mike Harris and Mel Lastman requesting each one for a separate, specific action to provide a safe cycling environment. We will collect letters from cyclists on strike, directed at each level of government, and ensure that they are properly posted. ARC will continue the cyclists' strike with street actions, lobbying and letter campaigns until our demands have been met.

Our Federal Demand:

Dear Mr. Jean Chretien,
Large trucks are a hazard to cyclists. We demand that the Ministry of Transport ensure that all large trucks in Canada be equipped with sideguards to ensure that cyclists will not be able to fall underneath the wheels. This important safety measure was recomended as part of a coroner's report into cycling deaths in 1998. It is time for action on this issue.


Our Provincial Demand:

Dear Mr. Mike Harris,
Careless opening of car doors is potentially fatal to cyclists. The Highway Traffic Act does not reflect the seriousness of this dangerous crime. We demand an adjustment to the HTA that would increase the penalty for dooring a cyclist to a charge of criminal negligence causing injury or death. We also demand a province-wide publicity campaign to educate drivers of the life and death consequences of opening a car door into a cyclist's path. It doesn't hurt drivers to check. Forgetting to check could kill one of
us.


Our Municipal Demand:

Dear Mel Lastman,
Cyclists demand safe passage on College. It is currently impossible for cyclists to ride safely on College Street west of Euclid. The City is developing a Bike Master Plan that makes no provisions for cyclists on important east/west routes such a College, Bloor, Dundas, Queen or King. This is unacceptable. We demand that parking be removed on College west of Euclid in order to provide a safe bike lane all the way to High Park.

ARC is a group which formalizes the principle of cyclists standing up for each other. ARC was formed in August 1996 as a community response to a particularly brutal two weeks which saw two cyclists killed by trucks and another two arrested on a Critical Mass ride. Initially formed to lobby for a coroner's inquest and to help in the arrestees' defense, ARC has since expanded to provide support and legal advice to cyclists involved in accidents, to educate on cyclists' rights, and to hold direct actions aimed at changing society's dependence on the automobile.
