RONA to Create Cycling Team
MONTRÉAL, November 2, 2000 - RONA Inc. today announced that it will be the title sponsor of an elite women's cycling team that will compete throughout North America next year. This is the company's first international sports sponsorship.
Team RONA will initially comprise six athletes, including Geneviève Jeanson, 1999 world junior champion, Olympic athlete and the only Canadian woman in the top 20 ranking by the International Cycling Union.
Team RONA will be managed by André Aubut, whose reputation in the cycling world is closely linked with Geneviève Jeanson's performance. Details on other members of the team and events will be announced in early December.
"By creating the RONA Team, we are once again demonstrating our commitment to sport, and cycling in particular," stated RONA president and CEO Robert Dutton. "This initiative will also allow RONA to continue to demonstrate its key values: teamwork, determination, discipline, perseverance, passion and a drive for excellence."
RONA has already demonstrated its commitment to cycling on a number of occasions. For example, in June, RONA L'entrepôt in the Montreal area was a major sponsor of the Montreal Bike Festival. In August, RONA announced that it would provide substantial backing to Geneviève Jeanson, before her departure to the Sydney Olympic Games.
RONA also provides financial support to the Jeux to Québec organization in Rimouski and in Lachine.
