Our long-time supporter and reader Johanna Bertin asked us to pass on this worthy request:
Please support #BeccaToldMeTo and spread random acts of kindness.
I am approaching the cycling community for support with #BeccaToldMeTo. Over the years I have been involved with cycling, I have witnessed so many acts of kindness amongst cyclists, both at home and at competitions. I have seen how you cheer each other on at races, lend each other equipment, mentor each other, and offer a supportive hug when the day does not unfold as someone hoped. So, though Rebecca Schofield of Riverview, NB is not a cyclist, I am coming to you with a request: to support her goal to create a "mass act of kindness."
"Becca" Schofield (17) has been fighting cancer for two years. Despite recently learning that she has inoperable brain tumours, Becca has taken on a new campaign: to persuade people everywhere to perform a "mass act of kindness."
Do something to make someone smile and then tweet what you did under the hashtag #BeccaToldMeTo, or post on her Face Book page - Becca's Battle with Butterscotch (you have to join first.) Your acts of kindness don't have to be big, or expensive, they just need to come from the heart.
In Becca's own words, "Since so many people want to help with my bucket list, dad and I have masterminded a plan that will allow anyone to help. No matter how young or old, rich or poor, no matter where in the world you are, you can participate. I want to create a mass act of kindness! I want to get a worldwide trend on Twitter of #BeccaToldMeTo.
It's pretty simple. No matter who you are, if you see this message, please do an act of kindness for someone else. It can be as big or small as you'd like. Donate to charity, volunteer your time, or even just do the dishes without your parents asking. Shovel someone's walkway or visit someone you know will be alone this holiday season. Get creative!
Terry Fox wanted to impact the world, to help make it a better place, and I do too! Do something to make someone smile, and then tweet what you did under the hashtag #BeccaToldMeTo.
So tell your friends, post it on imgur and Reddit, anything you can do to spread the word."
For cyclists, the options are huge. Donate your "previous" bike to the Boys and Girls Club, with a note saying #BeccaToldMeTo. Fix a flat tire for someone, help them tune their bike, take them for a training run, offer to look after their kids so they can go for a ride, help clear a mountain bike trail. And tell them #BeccaToldMeToo.
Thank you,
Johanna Bertin
