The Mattamy National Cycling Centre will officially open its doors to the community on Family Day, Monday, February 16, 2015. The Community Opening Celebration will offer Milton residents an opportunity to get acquainted with the new facility, while participating in a variety of free, family-friendly activities.
"I invite all Miltonians and their families to join me at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre for this special celebration," said Milton Mayor Gord Krantz. "This facility has something for family members of all ages, and I encourage you to come and explore everything it has to offer."
The event will begin at 10:00 am and run until 2:00 pm, with face painting, family sports, fitness activities, facility tours and cycling demonstrations available throughout the duration. Mayor Krantz will lead the official opening ceremonies and ribbon cutting from 11:00 to 11:30 am.
The Community Opening Celebration will provide Miltonians with a preview of the many recreation offerings that are available at the facility. Free family badminton, basketball, pickleball and volleyball will all be offered on the Centre's multi-use infield gymnasium. Family yoga and Zumba classes will also be available in the Fitness Studio, which features stunning views of the Niagara Escarpment.
Younger family members can get a taste of the facility's registered programs by taking part in free "Try It" sessions of the Move More Sports Program. The walking/jogging/training track will provide a bird's eye view of all the activities, and will host a range of free family programming throughout the event.
Due to the large number of visitors expected to attend the celebration, limited parking will be available at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre. Families are encouraged to take the free shuttle, sponsored by Cannon Design to and from the event. The shuttle will run from 9:45 am to 2:15 pm and will pick up and drop off at Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School. Families are also invited to arrive early to the event, as the first 1000 visitors will receive a free water bottle.
The Mattamy National Cycling Centre is the only velodrome of its kind in Canada, and only the second in North America that meets top international standards. It serves as a community recreation facility, offering registered and drop-in sports, fitness and cycling programs, as well as a venue for provincial, national and international cycling events.
In the summer of 2015, it will host the cycling competitions for the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. During the games, the facility will be known as the Cisco Milton Pan Am/Parpan Am Velodrome.
