Cycling Canada has released the names of the nine athletes who will represent Canada at the Continental Mountain Bike Championships, which begin tomorrow in Barbacena, Brazil, where they will compete against riders from the rest of the Americas. The event starts tomorrow (March 27th) and ends on Sunday (March 30th).
The team of nine Canadian athletes is highlighted by a mix of young emerging talent and proven, experienced athletes. Among the group are some contenders for medals including Raphael Gagné of Québec, QC, Mikaela Kofman of Toronto, ON and Frédérique Trudel of Breakeyville, QC (2013 U23 Canadian Champion), all of whom were medallists at the 2013 Continental Championships. Notably, reigning Canadian Champion Derek Zandstra of Trenton, ON will also be suiting up for Canada. Since the 2016 Olympic qualification period has not yet started, a number of Canada's top-ranked riders elected not to attend.
The Canadian contingent will be headed to these UCI Continental Championships with the objectives to gain international experience, earn precious points for world rankings, and prepare for the upcoming World Cup season and World Championships.
