AGELESS RUSSIAN WINS OPENER AT WORLD TRACK CUP IN TREXLERTOWN

TREXLERTOWN, Pa. -- Russian Galina Enioukhina earned her second World Cup win of the young season as she won the women‚s 500 meters Thursday at the opening
event at the second round of the UCI World Track Cup at Lehigh Valley Velodrome.

Enioukhina, 37, won the 500 meters in 36.516 seconds, topping Olympic individual pursuit champion Antonella Bellutti of Italy by 0.347 seconds. The Russian won the match sprint at the opening round of the World Track Cup last week in Cali, Colombia. That event starts tomorrow in Trexlertown.

American Nicole Reinhart, 20, of nearby Macungie, Pa., was seventh with a time of 37.721 seconds. Reinhart is competing in her first World Cup on American soil.

In other action, Darryn Hill (Australia), the 1995 world sprint champion, qualified first in that event and moved into the round. American Marty Nothstein, Trexlertown, Pa., qualified second and also moved easily into the second round as did Marcelo Arrue, Alburtis, Pa. Nothstein won the sprint and keirin competitions at the opening round of the World Cup in Cali.

Repeating the final results from the Cali World Cup, Russian Alexei Markov and American Christian Vande Velde, Lemont, Ill., qualified first and second respectively, in the men‚s individual pursuit. The duo will square off in tonight‚s final.

Tonight‚s action will also include the women‚s points race final and the men‚s kilometer time trial. Action at the second of six World Cups continues through Saturday, May 31.

Smoking and Mountain Biking together is WRONG! How can a race promoter even think about getting sponsorship from a cigarette company? My friend smokes and I took him for a slow ride out back of my school. He was huffing and weezing and afterwards he vowed never to go mountain biking again ("Too much suffering" he said). When I told him that maybe he should stop smoking and start riding (or doing something active), he said something along the lines of "It's not worth the effort". Smoking over riding...that was the choice, and he chose smoking. What a waste.

I can understand that races are in dire need of sponsorship money, but they don't need the bad publicity of a cigarette sponsor. A few years ago, race organizers didn't hold races to make money. They did it for a love of the sport and to showcase the awesome riders out there. Now promoters and organizers are trying to capitalize on the growing
popularity of mountain biking and make a profit from races, which I don't think will ever happen. If it means getting money from cigarette companies, it definitely shouldn't happen.
