Registration recently opened for pro/am cyclists and teams for the 8th annual Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove, on August 2-4, in the Chicago suburb of Elk Grove Village.
Tour of Elk Grove's total prize purse for its men's and women's pro races is more than $59,000. Over $41,000 of this prize money is earmarked for the men's showcase pro 3-day, 3-stage tour.
And back again will be the 3-day, 3-stage women's pro race. The total prize purse for this tour is $17,500.
Tapped to announce the weekend's races will be '80s/'90s pro cycling legend Bob Roll. He's a three-time Tour de France racer and, since retiring in the early '90s, has authored several books and is a cable TV sports commentator.
Tour of Elk Grove is designated as a prestigious International Cycling Union (aka UCI) Category 2.1 event. (UCI is the world governing body for sports cycling and oversees international competitive cycling events.)
This year's Tour of Elk Grove features a total of 12 professional and amateur races. The women's pro 3-day, 3-stage race is again on USA Cycling's prestigious National Racing Calendar.
This year's Tour of Elk Grove's highlights are:
The weekend of racing kicks off late Friday afternoon with 4.5-mile Time Trial races for both men and women. (The Time Trials are Stage 1 of both the men's and women's pro 3-day, 3 stage races.)
The Stage 2 Road Race for pro men and the Stage 2 Criterium Race for pro women will be held on Saturday afternoon.
The Stage 3 Circuit Race for pro men as well as the Stage 3 Circuit Race for pro women will be held on Sunday afternoon.
In addition, the returning Men's Elite Category 1/2 races will be held Saturday and Sunday. It features a total of $5,000 in prize money.
Tour of Elk Grove also features a Time Trial race for charity on Friday at 3:30 p.m., two community races on Sunday, a sports expo with food and other vendors, and community "block parties" on Friday and Saturday nights with food, fireworks and live music.
