The opening night of racing for the 2013 track season at the Forest City Velodrome in London, Ontario, had 64 riders on the infield contesting six divisions of racing. Over 25 youth racers under the age of 19 attended the Speedfest 2013. Organizers had to make sure the abilities of all the kids were equalized and all of the Future Stars had a great night of racing, some for the first time.
There were three categories of Future Stars, the FCV regulars (who are all under 12 years old), seven young ladies from Team CHCH, and the new youth riders from Team Hardwood Hills from the Barrie area. It was great to see all the kids speeding around the track, everyone gave their fellow competitors lots of room, and the racing was fast and safe .... just the way we like it.
In the other categories, Ben Perry, Adam Jamieson and Miles Eastwood all had outstanding performances in the Scratch races and "last man standing". In the B division , Tood Schesky (Rochester, NY) and Kim Edwards (Clinton, CT), along with Biran Folk-Doltan, had great finishes on the night. The C division had Jordann Jones lap the field in the endurance races. This is the fourth race in a row that Jordann has shown his dominance.
The Madison teams showed their rust after over a month of non-activity. The early race had to be neutralized, as there were two extra teams on the track and organizers wanted to make sure the teams understood the importance of being safe during these high speed events. The Madison Speedfest was won by the team of Ian Currie and Dave Byers, while second overall after the three events went to the very competitive team of Claudia Newdick and Will Simonds. Third place went to Lucas Taylor and "The Professor" Lorne Falkenstein.
There were many new track racing fans in the stands to watch the first race of 2013. We invite everyone back to the FCV on Saturday, January 26th, at 7pm.
