That is because all but one of the ranking races is in Europe! There is a pattern here - can you figure out what it is... The organizer of the National Cyclo-cross championships will be, from time to time, sending us brief bits of cyclo-cross trivia:  For the National Cyclo Cross Championships the Bicycle ridden shall comply with Section 2 of the CCA Rules of Racing.  Of particular note for the event are the following:  1. The width of the tire in a cyclo cross can not be more than 35 mm.  2. No 'delta', 'cowhorn', ' triathlete' handlebars will be permitted.   Manitoba News (courtesy of the Manitoba Cycling Association)  Provincial Coach Eric Reid will be leaving the MCA at the end of September for greener pastures (literally in winter) in Ferni BC. We all wish him well in his new endeavors.   Watch out for road construction in the town of Birds Hill Mb. They are reconstructing the main road thru the town. (Hwy 202) Looks like this won't be finished till late fall.   For members of the Winnipeg Cycletouring Club the annual AGM meeting is coming to elect the clubs executive council. The meeting will take place at the Sport Manitoba building 200 Main Street, 2nd floor, Tuesday November 4th, 1997. (***NOTE: THIS IS THE CORRECTED DATE, THE ORIGINAL DATE IN THE NEWSLETTER WAS WRONG***) Free Pizza & Pop @ 6 pm and the Meeting starts @ 7 pm   If you are a frequent rider in the Town of Selkirk or in the Selkirk area be aware of the local Mounties in the area. Through recent experience some have found the mounties to be cyclist unfriendly and some will vigorously enforce the Highway Traffic Act. BE WARNED. Pomposity and bravado seem to be in vogue.   If you use Turnbull Drive ( also called Red River Drive) you will be happy to know that the city has repaved the first couple of kilometres starting at Pembina Hwy and heading south past the floodway gates to around the transit bus turnaround. Nice smooth asphalt!  ***NEW*** The provincial highway department is now patching the worst of the pavement breaks on the rest of Red River Drive! My next wish, pave the shoulder on Hwy 75 from the road into St. Adolphe to Red River Drive. As well, Hwy 200 south of St. Adolphe has had much work resurfacing for the past couple of weeks. Shoulder repairs too. The highway that runs into Niverville from Highway 200 has been repaired as well.   ******COMING SOON*******The annual M.C.A. Awards Night. Mark your calender now for Saturday, November 15 1997 for an evening of Dinner, Dancing and Awards from this years cycling season. The whole evening gets under way at the SPORT MANITOBA BUILDING, 2ND FLOOR at 5.:30 pm for Cocktails, Awards start at 6 pm, dinner at 6:45, with more awards and fun after dinner. Tickets are just $10 and are available at the MCA office. HURRY ONLY 200 ARE AVAILABLE!   Note that there is a new diamond lane on Osborne Street (southbound only) starting around the Art Gallery and proceeding south to just over the Osborne St bridge. These are in use from 3:30 PM (1530) to 5:30 PM (1730) monday to friday.   The Recreation and Transportation Committee of the MCA, has obtained funding from the MCA, to conduct a feasibility study for alternative forms of transportation to all or some of the Pan Am Games venues for visitors. If the feasibility study is successful in attracting further funding for specific projects, MCA would continue to oversee the projects. Partners in this endeavor would likely include the Pan Am Transportation Committee, Manitoba Sport and Fitness, the City of Winnipeg (subcommittee on cycling), Environment Canada and private enterprise. The feasibility study would be prepared by a consultant working with the Rec and Trans Committee and other partners. It would evaluate the Pan Am sites and feasible alternative forms of transportation to each, take into consideration the existing Winnipeg Bicycle Plan and provide a description of the types of projects that could be undertaken dependant upon levels of funding. The study might decide to concentrate on a few venues or tackle all of them. With regard to cyclists, safe to the events, route maps, secure lockup areas and incentives not to use cars (allowing bikes to park at the site entrance while cars park much further away) would form part of the plan. Also mentioned as incentives for those who left their cars at home were "prizes"drawn daily from those who used the bike park or took buses. The project can provide a legacy after the Pan Am games in the form of improved cycling facilities for recreational and commuting cyclists in the province. The committee needs help in reaching its objectives. Anyone interested in helping should call the Recreation and Transportation Vice President, Sharron Bettess at 478 6245 or e-mail at bettess@aol.com   ****NOTE*** It has come to our attention that a private landowner next to the racecourse on Hillside Road, has had a problem with people trespassing in, and on his gravel pit (west of the race course) causing damage. Now we do believe that cyclists are not responsible for this, and that the problem lays with local area dirt bikers. However we do ask that any cyclist using this area be extra vigilant and obey any posted no trespassing signs. This landowner may petition the municipality to ban any and all cycling activities in the area on this municipal land. Further we also ask that anyone attending to the Hillside Road racecourse by vehicle NOT TO PARK ANYWHERE ON HILLSIDE ROAD. Please park your vehicle in Birds Hill Park and enter the racecourse from the north.    Ontario Provincial Hillclimb Championship, Dundas, Ontario  42 riders braved the chilly (10 Celcius) temperatures today to compete in the Ontario Hillclimb Championships (sadly, your editor was forced to forego the pleasure - waiting for telephone calls from the World‚s in Europe...). The organizer will be providing full results shortly, but here are the winners.  Senior Men - Matt Hanson 4:35  Senior Women - Sue Palmer (Saturn) 4:57  Veteran Men - James Stinson 5:50  Junior Men - Dominic Rigato 5:05  The organizers wanted us to mention that the Mississauga Cycling Club went out of their way to support the event with food and volunteers   Dundas Valley - A Day of Education in Conservation  This event, designed to raise awareness of the Dundas Valley conservation area, and to introduce different trail users to each other, was a HUGE success. Our publisher saw in excess of 200 trail users (of all categories) at the event - and she was only there for the first hour. Kudos to the Hamilton-Wentworth Mountain Bike Association for raising trail awareness, and showing that cyclists can be responsible trail users. (You can contact the H-WMBA at 905-627-7925).
