Ontario University Mountain Bike Council
(courtesy Neil Ross)
University mountain bikers are excited to announce the establishment of the "Ontario University Mountain Bike Race Council" (OUMRC). This council is made up of energetic students and alumni from universities across the Province who currently participate in the "University Cup" mountain bike race series. The September / October race series has been growing in popularity over the past three years. These races are open to registered Ontario university students.
The council was formed to promote and ensure the continuation of the sport of varsity level cross-country mountain bike racing, allow better communication between schools, sharing of ideas and fiscal responsibility in regard to the University Cup Race Series. Although not yet an official OUA sport, mountain biking has been widely welcomed by many university sports programs and official status is rumored to be in the works...
David Wright (University of Toronto), Chairperson of the council, hopes to have representatives from all Ontario universities soon. The first meeting of the council was held last month at the University of Guelph. Representatives from 8 universities were in attendance. A pre-season budget and post-season cost analysis will be provided to all OUMRC representatives. The Council is now a registered non-profit organization affiliated with the Ontario Cycling Association.
(If you'd like information on the UofT's involvement you can contact Liz Hoffman - Dean of Athletics, UofT liz.hoffman@utoronto.ca)
