You may have noticed a button on our home page for the CC Mailing List. We have started the mailing list to provide our readers with the opportunity to receive updates on special events coverage we are providing, new event registrations, new CC Store products, and late breaking important news items.

You can sign up for the mailing list by clicking on the button and providing your e-mail address. We will also ask for your name and date of birth as a verification if you decide at some point to have your name removed from the list.

CC Store

If you go into the CC Store, you will notice that we have improved the appearance and navigation interface. We have also just added a Video Clearouts section. Now you can pick up road and mountain bike videos for as low as $9.99. Just click on the CC Store icon in the upper left corner of your browser.

12 cyclists had their own version of "Thunder on Ice", Wednesday night at the first Cycling Association of the Yukon race of the season.

Riding a 11km circuit, competitors started on one side of a frozen Long Lake and rode their bikes around its' icy perimeter. When they reached the Hidden Lakes parking lot, the course climbed off the lake and made its' way back to the start via wooded trails.

In the Men's division, Ross Phillips rode the fastest of all competitors, winning the race in 30:20. Bob Boorman was nearly a minute back of Phillips, arriving in second place. Robert Smith, possibly the new 15 year old wonderkid of the Yukon mountain biking community, flew into third place with his most impressive result ever.

The women's division was also hotly contested. Josee Boorman rode to a strong first place finish, followed shortly by a surging Deana Sabuda. Third place finisher Natasha Trovato also showed fine early season form, finishing only minutes behind Boorman.

Throughout the upcoming season, the CAY will present mountain bike, road and randonneur races on a weekly basis. A road race is the next event on the Yukon cycling calendar: On April 28th, cyclists will meet at the gas station on Hot Springs Rd. at 6:30pm for some pavement pounding action.

Following that event, the trails behind #6 Phelps in Wolf Creek will host the second mountain bike race of the season.

National Team Coach Makes a Solo Break

Former National Team Coach Steve Lund of the PacificSport National Cycling Centre announces a new private coaching company based in Victoria.

Lund, who last year coached the top three junior cross-country women riders at the Canadian National Mountain Bike Championships and the majority of the BC Games Team at Western Canada Games, resigned his position at the end of March. While he has coached National Team projects such as Pan Am Championships, Commonwealth Games, World Cup events and a number of international road races, he wants to focus on the domestic scene and help develop more riders.

"What I want to do is apply the idea of intensive coaching from the PacificSport National Cycling Centre bronze group to younger riders whose goal it is to reach that level and beyond," Lund said. "My plans also include starting a young riders club to offer consistent good coaching to teen-age racers year round and developing a website with pertinent information, tips and advice on a number of topics, including coaching options." Lund will continue to coach a number of Western Canada's top racers including National Team members Amber Chorney of the Ford-Devinci Mountain Bike team and road racer Sandy Espeseth, who rides for Intersports. "I appreciate all the time and effort Steve put into advising me", Chorney said. "His support of both the physical and mental aspects of training have been a great asset to me on and off the race course". Lund's proven coaching methods and stye will also now be made avaliable to any athlete looking to increase their performance.

Lund is one of only a few certified Level 4 Cycling Coaches in Canada, having graduated Victoria's National Coching Institute in 1998. He has been coaching and competing for nearly 15 years, having started his coaching career with the Juventus Cycling Club in Edmonton, before moving on the Alberta Provincial Team, and most recently with the Canadian National Team, via the PacificSport National Cycling Centre in Victoria.
