The Northumberland Hills Cycling Club took to the road on Sunday, April 29th, marking their one year anniversary with a 42km ride through Cobourg and some of the outlying rolling hills of Northumberland, finishing with a celebratory lunch at The Mill restaurant. There’s much to be excited about: In one short year ago, the NHCC has grown to 63 members, received a People’s Choice award for Best Cycling Club in Eastern Canada, formally incorporated, and experienced one phenomenal year.
Membership in the NHCC is growing at a steady rate. “People are very welcoming. The club has a nice balance between social and focus on cycling,” says one 52-year old. Word of mouth spreads fast. “There’s real camaraderie. Some have cycled all their lives and they are happy to mentor those who have just re-discovered their bicycle”
Enthusiasm is abundant. When Get Out There outdoor adventure magazine put out their 2012 People’s Choice Awards, the NHCC found themselves voted The Best Cycling Club in Eastern Canada.
The NHCC is here to stay. Recognizing a real need in our community for a recreational bike club of this nature and its potential for growth, the founders have incorporated the club with no plans to cap membership.
