ACTION FINALLY BEGINS AT EDS TRACK CUP Œ97 FINALS IN T-TOWN  For Immediate Release, Sept. 12, 1997 Contact: Frank Stanley, USCF Communications Manager, (719) 578-4581 or (610) 391-1500  TREXLERTOWN, Pa. -- After Mother Nature forced a day‚s postponement, action got underway at the $19,000 final round of the EDS Track Cup Œ97 at Lehigh Valley Velodrome.  Local products Nicole Reinhart (Cox Atlanta Velo), Macungie, Pa., and Becky Quinn (Tri State Velo), Quakertown, Pa., won the two women‚s events, the 500 meters and the points race, respectively. Reinhart defended one of her national titles in the points race, while Quinn -- the two-time Morning Call LVV Rider of the Year -- posted her first EDS Track Cup win of the year.  „Racing here all year makes a difference,‰ said Quinn, who was also third in the women‚s 500 meters.  Two-time British Olympian Shaun Wallace won the men‚s individual pursuit for the third time in the EDS Track Cup series, posting a time of 4:41.507. Chris Carlson (Team EDS), Dallas, Texas, was second.  U.S. World Championships team member Sky Christopherson (Mrs. T‚s-Lexus), Tucson, Ariz., overcame travel problems to win the men‚s kilometer time trial in a time of 1:06.63, besting Jason Garner (Northbrook BC), Newport Beach, Calif., by 0.73 seconds. Christopherson said he was delayed four times during his air travels from the West to the East.  During the seven-hour session, required after rain wiped out the entire first day of competition at the site of the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials, action also began in both the men‚s and women‚s match sprint competitions. National champions Reinhart and Marty Nothstein (Team EDS), Trexlertown, Pa., led their respective fields. Nothstein will face Canadian champion Doug Baron in one men‚s semifinal, while Marcelo Arrue (Mrs. T‚s-Lexus), Alburtis, Pa., will face Nothstein‚s teammate Mark Garrett, Arcadia, Calif., in the other.  Reinhart will face Shan Rayray (Alan‚s), Federal Way, Wash., in the women‚s quarterfinals. Other pairings include Canadian Michelle Boucher versus Tanya Lindenmuth (FCCC), Trexlertown, Pa.; Missy Thompson (PowerBar), Colorado Springs, Colo., versus Linda Braley (Bike Addicts), Philadelphia, Pa.; and Quinn versus Janie Quigley (Team Delaware), Wilmington, Del.  Also, the hotly contested team competition continued as Cox Atlanta Velo stretched its overall lead to 49 points over Team EDS. Nothstein rebounded from a disappointing World Championships to defeat Marcelo Arrue (Mrs. T‚s-Lexus), Alburtis, Pa., in two rides in the men‚s final.  Though happy with the win, Nothstein had his eyes on another goal.  „There‚s a bigger picture here -- the team competition,‰ he said. „We‚re going to have a tough day tomorrow.‰  With one day remaining in the year-long competition, Team EDS trails Cox Atlanta Velo by 37 points. Five finals will be contested on the final day.  Cox Atlanta Velo continued to put the pressure on by winning the team pursuit in a time of 4:31.406, continuing its record of winning every round of the EDS Track Cup Œ97 with the exception of the EDS National Championships.  Fresh from winning his third career Collegiate omnium title, Jame Carney (Shaklee), Durango, Colo., won the men‚s points race in a commanding performance. The three-time national points race champ was among five riders who took a lap in the 30km race. He defeated John Walrod (Cox Atlanta Velo), Macungie, Pa., 32 points to 21.  Action concludes Sunday with finals in the Olympic sprint, women‚s individual pursuit, Madison, keirin and women‚s match sprint.
