Three-time Olympian Gord Fraser, one of Canada's top road cyclists and an alumnus of the Canadian Road Cycling Team, is coming back to his Canadian roots to help support the Men's Elite Road Cycling Program.
Fraser, who competed for Canada in three Olympic Games and five Commonwealth Games, is joining the coaching staff of the Canadian Road Cycling team to ensure optimal communications between the Canadian Cycling Association (CCA), professional road cyclists and their teams as well as their private coaches.
"It's an honour for me to return to the Canadian Road Cycling Program and share the wealth of experience acquired throughout my career, either as an athlete or coach/manager. Canadian cycling is on the rise, and more Canadians are on the cusp of great international and professional victories," said Fraser, who will remain in his current position of Directeur Sportif with CompetitiveCyclist.com Racing Team in 2012.
Fraser's extensive experience as a Directeur Sportif for many professional cycling teams will help bring Canadian cycling to the forefront, and will bring the Canadian Road Program and its athletes closer to the professional cycling structure. His main involvement with the Canadian Road Cycling Team will be to manage team selections for Elite projects, including the 2012 Olympic Games and UCI Road World Championships.
"We are happy to see Gord coming on board to ensure we can deliver professional services to our Canadian athletes as we prepare to enter one of the most important seasons," said Jacques Landry, High Performance Director for the CCA. "We are confident that he will inspire many young Canadian cyclists to pursue their pathway to excellence, to excel on the national and international scene."
Fraser is an ideal candidate for the Canadian Cycling Association, with 12 years of professional cycling experience as a cyclist and a wealth of experience at major international events such as Olympic Games, World Championships and Commonwealth Games. In addition to his experience as an athlete, Gord has managed a professional cycling team since 2007 and worked with top-level, professional athletes on a daily basis.
In addition to his experience as an athlete, Gord gained invaluable coaching experience working full time for two years with Carmichael Training Systems (CTS) in their regional center in Tucson, Arizona but more recently having returned to his true passion; travelling with the professional team and athletes for the past three years.
Gord Fraser was born in Ottawa, Ontario. A sprinter by trade, he went on to post over 200 career wins, including the 2004 Canadian Road Championships. In addition to his successful athletic and management career, he also serves as television analyst for major international cycling races.
