As twelve months has past since the last AGM, next Monday the 15th of November the Nutra-Life Illawarra Cycle Club will hold it's AGM at Dapto Library at 7:30pm. All members and interested parties are encouraged to attend.
For the first time in three weeks the weekly race wasn't cancelled due to torrential rain. A good field of over forty riders participated in the 37.5km scratch races.
Ex member Rod Pickering now residing in Canberra gave the other riders in A grade a pretty hard race. Pickering attacked and was away for most of the race. The chasing group had to work well together to pull Pickering back, which they did as they approached the finish. Pickering still had enough left to win the sprint from Marcus Arnold and Tony Pulo.
Several riders attempted to get away at one stage or another in the B grade race. Rob Calladine, Dave Gray, Mick Lockyer and Garry Doughty all had a dig. All of the early attacks came to nothing as the vigilant pack including Lionel Covington, Terry Wall and Paul Blackwood covered ever move. It took a late attack from Blackwood and Calladine to break the grip of the bunch, the two finished 10 seconds ahead of the bunch with Blackwood taking out the sprint. Lockyer started his sprint early and took out third.
C grade stayed together for the whole race with no-one being allowed to slip away from the attentive pack. Phil Cuifo again kept the pace high at all times along with Afrian White, Paul DuBois and Graham Ward. In the sprint of the day it looked like Gordon Allen was going to be swamped on the line but he held on for the win with the minor placings being taken out by White and DuBois.
The D grade bunch was made up of the juniors so they only rode one lap for 18.5km. Steve Ruskin and Josh Wall attacked on the hill on the way out and got away from the bunch, the two worked well together to maintain and build on their lead. Rebecca Borgo and Jaclyn Kejda chased well but couldn't close the gap. Ruskin won the sprint for the win, Wall second and Borgo third.
Congratulations also go to Mick Kejda for his well deserved third placing in sprint event at the Australian Veteran titles held at the Gold Coast last week. We expect to see big things from Kejda on the track this year as he is being trained by noted track coach Glen Doney. Doney is also looking after the Illawarra Academy track riders.
