Canada's Top Cyclist Gather in Victoria

Alison Sydor, Seamus McGrath, Tanya Dubnicoff and Brian Walton will join their teammates in celebration of another exciting year of cycling achievements at the PacificSport National Cycling Centre Champions of Cycling Awards Gala∑.

Victoria, BC - Canada's top road, mountain and track cyclists will attend the PacificSport National Cycling Centre annual training camp from November 29 to December 12 in Victoria, BC.

The camp, under the direction of Canada's top coaches, including Head Coach of the PacificSport National Cycling Centre Yury Kashirin, provides an opportunity for all of the riders to train together, regardless of their discipline, as they prepare to qualify for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

"The athletes will go through the usual rigours of a training camp, including extensive physical and mental training, sport science testing and workshops pertaining to career and sponsorship areas," says Kashirin. "Their big night out is the Champions of Cycling Awards Gala, where they'll have a chance to recognize the achievements of their peers and say thank you to the cycling community."

The Gala, to be held Thursday, December 2, 1999, at the Ocean Pointe Resort ballroom, will once again feature an extensive silent auction, dinner and awards ceremony. A new feature of the Gala's silent auction is an on-line fundraising auction - with items such as Schwinn and Huffy bikes - that will run November 15-30 on the Canadian Cyclist web page. Many of the national team members who live in Victoria and train full time at the PacificSport National Cycling Centre will be joined by Olympic qualifiers Lyne Bessette, Linda Jackson, Clara Hughes, Annie Gariepy, Tanya Dubnicoff, Alison Sydor, Seamus McGrath, and Chrissy Redden. While the men's road team has qualified for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, the individual riders to make up the team have not yet qualified.

Award categories for the Gala include: Russ Coupland Award (best junior performance); male and female road, track and mountain bike athletes of the year, male and female downhill athletes, Steve Bauer Awards for most promising male and female riders, Corporate award, Community Leadership award and the President's Trophy for the top senior athlete.

The event, a fundraiser for the PacificSport National Cycling Centre programs, has become the premier evening for cycling in Canada and has sold out for the past two years. Tickets are $75 per person ($60 if purchased before November 20). Reserved tables of 10 are $600 and a Champions Table, consisting of eight cycling supporters and two of Canada's top cyclists, are $700. In addition to the training camp and gala, the Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Cycling Association will be held in Victoria from December 3 to 5th..

Note: The Canadian Cyclist of the Year Awards will also be presented at the Gala


New Training Camp

Drawing on the expertise of National Team Coaches Yury Kashirin and Steve Lund, the following programs have been developed in order to produce Canada's next cycling superstars. All camps will be based in Victoria.

SportWorks Camp Series

Junior Camps $150 for your first camp, $100 for each follow-up camp open to male and female athletes between 17 and 20 years of age. #1 - November 11-13, 1999; #2 - February 11-13, 2000; #3 - March 31-April 2, 2000; #4 and #5 will be scheduled in May and July based on the race schedule.

Cadet Camps $100 for your first camp, $75 for each follow-up camp, open to male and female athletes between 14 and 16 years of age. #1 - February 26-27, 2000; #2 - April 22-23, 2000; #3 and #4 will be scheduled in May and July based on the race schedule

This is designed as a series of camps, participation in all camps will ensure your best performances, first time athletes will be welcome at each camp up to the maximum number. Initial Camp will include testing, bike fit, performance assessment, your personalized PacificSport Annual Performance Training and Monitoring Package and lots of riding with top coaches and Pro Athletes. Follow-up Camps will include testing, assessment and adjustment of training programs and lots of riding with top coaches and Pro Athletes
