November 2/10 15:29 pm - UCI Releases ProTeam & Professional Continental List for 2011

On the basis of the dossiers received by the International Cycling Union and their evaluation in collaboration with the auditors Ernst & Young, the UCI will register the teams listed below in either the first or second divisions for the 2011 season.

It should be noted that to date, only first division teams with continuing licences which meet the required sporting, ethical, financial and administrative criteria as well as teams seeking to be registered in the second division which have provided dossiers considered to be in compliance, have been registered by the UCI.

The dossiers of other teams - and in particular those of new teams - will be sent to the Licence Commission. On November 20th, the UCI will communicate the decision of the Licence Commission on awarding the remaining first division licences and the registration of the other teams in the second division.

The final decisions of the Licence Commission (for teams that have been required to make their dossiers comply) will be communicated on December 10th.

Steve Bauer's SpiderTech p/b C10 (note the change in sponsor from Planet Energy) has applied for Pro Continental status (moving up from Continental), but is not among the teams named by the UCI, with 13 named today, including U.S. squads Team Type 1 and UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling.

Steve Bauer responded to the news by e-mail: "Disappointing is an understatement. However, the UCI require further verification of our file even though we have submitted the required documents."

"We will appear before the UCI license commission to supply any further information and ensure our team become the first Canadian Continental Professional Team."

The UCI is toughening up the criteria to make the ProTeam ranks (the new name for the first division ProTour squads), using the results from 2009 and 2010 for the top 15 riders on each squad to determine team rankings. Rabobank, Garmin-Cervélo, Omega Pharma-Lotto and Sky are the only confirmed teams to make the ProTeam level at this point.

The new Luxembourg Pro Cycling Project leads the rankings, and all 15 top-ranked squads will be able to receive or maintain ProTeam status on the condition, of course, that they also fulfil the ethical, financial and administrative criteria.

The three remaining ProTeam spots will be fought for by the 16th to 20th ranked teams: Eustaltel-Euskadi, Geox-TMC, Quick Step, Cofidis and AG2R. FDJ (which Dominique Rollin has just joined) and Pegasus Sports (formerly Fly V Australia, which Svein Tuft has signed with) will not be allowed to join the ProTeam division.
