'Dreams do come true,' Hesjedal says
In the shadow of the Arc de Triomphe came personal triumph yesterday for Canadian cyclist Ryder Hesjedal.

"It was a lifetime of work. Dreams do come true," said the 29-year-old cyclist, whose seventh place overall was the best result by a Canadian in the Tour de France since Steve Bauer of Fenwick, Ont., finished fourth in 1988.

Canadian Hesjedal finishes seventh overall in France
As the Tour de France ended on a leisurely note, Canadians Michael Barry and Ryder Hesjedal finally got to swap stories on their bikes.

"We actually had a good chat this morning," Barry told The Canadian Press after the race. "This morning was pretty much the first time in the three weeks where we've really been able to cruise along and just talk about this and that, the race, and the future."

Seventh is sweet success for Canadian Hesjedal
"I hope this result does positive things for Canadian cycling and motivates the next generation of Canadian cyclists," Hesjedal said from France. "I hope that's the biggest thing that comes out of this.

"The support out there on the road today was unreal, with several Canadian flags waving, and that kept me focused after three weeks of hard racing," he added. "Seven is a pretty cool number, especially when it comes to the general classification (overall standings) in the Tour de France. That (placing) is there forever."

Hesjedal not on Commonwealth cycling team
Tour de France competitor Michael Barry and double world champion Tara Whitten topped the list of cyclists named Thursday to Canada's roster for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

Barry, who was in 99th place through 17 stages of this year's Tour, finished ninth in the road race at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The Toronto native also represented Canada at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England.
