After crashes and chaos on a rain-slicked descent took out many of the top riders, the peloton decided to regroup and rolled into the finish together, over three minutes down on breakaway rider Sylvain Chavanel (Quick Step), who took the stage, Yellow and Green jerseys. His team mate Jerome Pineau was an early member of the break and wears the Polka Dot climber's jersey. The results may still change to reflect the chaos, and that certain top riders, such as Christian Vande Velde (Garmin Transitions) and Damiano Cunego (Lampre Farnese) are now nearly ten minutes down.
