BC's Giant Women's Team to Fold
Press release
Jeremy Storie, the director of the BC based Giant Women's Team announced that the team would not be operating in 2009. Giant Canada are moving marketing money into categories which can be felt mutually through the province and country for all dealers was the message relayed to the team and at this late a time frame it was decided to abandon the team for 2009.
The BC based Giant Women's team was started in 2007 by Storie who, along with Wayne Bleakley and Sean Kerr of Giant Canada, saw a need for a local presence in women's racing. In the two seasons the team raced as Giant Canada (2007) and Giant Canada/Team Whistler (2008) and won 4 National Championships on the road and track along with 7 other National Championship medals, two BC Road Race Championship titles, an individual and team overall title at Superweek's Tour de Delta in separate years, a Western Canada Games gold medal, and in total over 25 victories and 40 additional podium places.
The mandate of the team was to foster the development of riders in a quality team atmosphere and move them on to the next level. To this end Storie is even more proud of the fact that in two years the Giant team was able, in some small way, to help place Leah Guloien and Jenny Trew onto the US based Vanderkitten team in 2008, and Steph Roorda on the New Zealand based Jazz Apple professional team for 2009. The team would like to thank Giant Canada, Barry Lyster's Local Ride bicycle shop and multi-service staff Dave Hardy and Ian Dingwall, Great Western Bicycle and BBB eyewear, Tony Routley and Team Whistler, and Bryan Anderson at Sugoi for their support.
