Gearing Up! Get Ready for the BVC Maydays!

The Burnaby Velodrome is proud to announce Maydays! Taking place May 9th through 11th, 2008, this exciting weekend will offer racing for every level of rider, and will feature non-stop entertainment for spectators, including the fun-for-all Kiddie Kilo, which is open to any rider age 10 and under.

The A, B, and C groups will be racing on Friday night, Saturday day and night, and on Sunday. Each of these sessions will feature the very popular two-man team Madison races for both the A group and the B group, along with other exciting racing action in all the categories.

If pure strength and tactics are more your forte, then check out our A and B category Sprint competition. Starting on Friday night and running through to Sunday afternoon, the Sprint competition will feature Chariot races, a Flying 200m time trial, a 500m time trial, a match sprint tournament, a sprinters wheelrace and the no holds barred Keirin race.

The New Racer groups will be showcased on Saturday morning, taking to the boards to compete in a variety of mass start races.Elite women racing will also be showcased, with 3 races scheduled as part of the race action on Sunday.

Also up on Saturday morning: the BVC Kiddie Kilo! Calling all boys and girls 10 and under, tell your parents to bring you down to the Bubble on Barnet on Saturday for some FREE fun on a bike racing track. You can bring whatever bike you have whether it be a Tricycle, BMX, mountain bike or pink cruiser with tassels, but don't forget your helmet as that is mandatory or else you won't get to race. Prizes and awards will be given to all competitors so come out and have some fun!

Saturday night will see the return of the very popular Fixie Challenge, with a variety of races and competitions that is sure to entertain and amaze! The evening will also feature beverages by Red Truck, food, music, and more!

If you live or are visiting in BC's Fraser Valley you will be welcome to participate in the Wednesday evening ride. Whether you are looking for coaching,conditioning, technical help, or race training, the place is Mission Race Ways. This venue is a safe paved circuit of about 1.2 km. Blaine 'Cannonball' Richter of GP won the tough stage #5, 'Rocky Road Classic' 18 km event, Tuesday night. He won with a time of 35:54 minutes. Pat Ferris was second at 38:33 and Bob Andrews third at 41:05. Rod Lewis was 4th at 42:27.

Jolea Bilodeau won a close sprint with Kendra Young to win the women's race at 42:27 minutes. Barb Polehoykie was third at 41:05.

The 'Peace View Painfest' was a new Rocky Road route designed by Rod Lewis and set in the hills of north Taylor. Riders rode through dry packed dirt, loose gravel, ice, mud and water to cover the distance.

Richter pulled away on the long, early hill to come in for his 4th Spring Stage win to lead the 7 race series with 24 points. Pat Ferris is in second with 13 points. Barb Polehoykie leads the women's event with 23 points.

Next race is a Thursday night Baldonnel time trial at 6 pm.

Secret Cycles will be extending this inclusive approach beyond the store itself by getting involved in community initiatives that enable the public to lead more active, healthier lives through cycling. We have already partnered with Evolve, a Tri-Cities cycling club, and will be taking part in local events throughout the year to ensure cycling remains a fun and accessible activity.

Customer service and community involvement is backed up by top quality products that meet the needs of both the cyclist and our unique environment. Many of the products the store carries are made for the West Coast by the West Coast. The premier BC based bicycle brands of Kona, Brodie and Rocky Mountain are complemented by Opus from eastern Canada and Santa Cruz from California. As the store expands its product and accessory selection, it will continue to feature the best BC and Canada has to offer as much as possible.

Unlike many bike shops, Secret Cycles will also be providing a good cross section of products designed specifically for women including clothes, bikes and accessories as well as offering women-only group rides and clinics. Plus, having a female co-owner ensures women's cycling at all levels will remain an important part of Secret Cycles.

A grand opening celebration is planned for Saturday, April 5th and a number of activities will be happening at Secret Cycles that day including great in-store specials, manufacturer representatives on-site with demo bikes, draw prizes, trials demos by the Baia brothers and more.

Secret Cycles is conveniently located on the Barnet Hwy near the border between Port Moody and Coquitlam and is open Tuesday to Sunday.
