Five Points of Life - Cyclists Needed
Cyclists are needed to join a seven-week, East Coast bike ride to raise national awareness for the Five Points of Life, a LifeSouth program. Riders should be amateurs with a personal connection to one or more of the five points: blood, apheresis, bone marrow, organ and tissue, and umbilical cord blood donations. Selected riders must pledge to raise a minimum of $5000 to help cover the cost of the event.
Riders are asked to volunteer to ride from Bar Harbor, Maine, to Key West, Fla., during September and October of 2000. Riders will share their personal stories of giving or receiving one or more of the Five Points of Life with communities along the way. There is a special need for minorities who can address the issue of the need for minority donors of the Five Points of Life.
The 2000 Ride will be the third for the Five Points of Life program. In 1997 and 1998, a team of cyclists rode from California's coast to Florida's coast, stopping in communities at special events organized along the way. The events were coordinated with local blood centers, National Marrow Donor Program centers, and organ and tissue procurement agencies, and featured local patients and donors from the community.
Interested applicants can fax or mail a one-to-two page summary detailing their personal connection to the Five Points of Life, and include information about why they want to participate and their fitness level and ability to complete the ride.
The Five Points of Life is a special program of LifeSouth Community Blood Centers which is headquartered in Gainesville, Fla. LifeSouth is a nonprofit, volunteer blood center with branches in Alabama, Florida and Georgia. LifeSouth provides whole blood and apheresis components for patient transfusion to 70 medical centers, was a charter member of the National Marrow Donor Program, and operates an umbilical cord blood bank.
