Ski Area are pleased to announce the participation of Volkswagen Canada with it's New Brunswick dealers, Vision Volkswagen, Saint John, Dieppe Auto Inc., Moncton and Fredericton Volkswagen, as title sponsor of the first ever National Canada Cup Mountain Bike Race to be held in New Brunswick.
On May 22 and 23, 1999 scores of racers and spectators will gather at Poley Mountain Ski Area, near Sussex, N.B. to participate in two days of mountain bike racing and bicycle related activities. Athletes at the Poley race will be competing for national Canada Cup series and international UCI points to qualify for next year‚s Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
The two day Poley Mt. Canada Cup is expected to draw over 500 cyclists from across Canada and the Northeastern US. Bicycle industry manufacturers and local businesses will participate in an exposition area to display the latest in designs and technology.
An event the scale of the Poley Mt. Canada Cup race is a major undertaking. The organizers would like to also acknowledge the assistance of supporting co-sponsors: the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), NBTel Mobility/Cox Radio & TV, MBS Radio, as well as the many other contributing sponsors. The continuing support of sponsors, the local community and the many volunteers is crucial in the hosting of this national level event.

Syncros Sells Chainrings Consumer Direct on Internet
Syncros will begin selling their chainrings consumer direct via their website http://www.syncros.com on May 1st. "The recent closure of North America's largest private label chainring manufacturer has left a vacuum. We make great chainrings and we want to help fill the void." stated sales manager, Leana Trogi.
Syncros has increased production of their 8 & 9 speed compatible, ceramic coated 7075 aluminum chainrings and will use their website to boost availability to consumers. "We don't see our online sales replacing dealers but as an alternate source for markets where there are no Syncros dealers stocking our rings" stated Trogi.
Rings will be sold at Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price (in $US) plus freight and handling. The online sale of chainrings joins the already successful online sales page of the company's website.
LAW Voted Onto Traffic Board
Marking the first time that a bicycling organization has ever been included, the League of American Bicyclists (LAW) has been voted as a member of the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (NCUTCD). The League joins 18 other organizations that make up this Committee, including the American Automobile Association (AAA), the National Safety Council, and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).
The NCUTCD is an independent organization that drafts the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices used nationwide. The Manual is published in the Federal Register and adopted by the Department of Transportation as the mandatory national standard for road signage, markings, and traffic devices on all roads, streets, and highways across the United States.
"This is a significant achievemen for the League, for bicycling, and for everyone who cares about promoting cycling in this country," said Jody Newman, Executive Director of the League. "It is vital that our roads and traffic patterns be set up to maximize safe and enjoyable cycling, and to promote sharing of the road by cyclists and motorists. Our acceptance into the NCUTCD marks our continued progress in making America more bicycle friendly."
The NCUTCD convenes twice a year, with the next meeting scheduled for June 1999 in Orlando, Florida. In addition to the full Committee, League representatives will serve on the NCUTCD's Bicycle Technical Committee.
NiteRider and Outdoor Gear Canada Team Up
San Diego, California (April 28, 1999) The best is teaming with the best. Outdoor Gear Canada (OGC) will be distributing NiteRider Technical Lighting Systems, Inc. products in Canada.
"OGC has such a great reputation we couldn't be happier," says John Haywood, vice-president of sales and marketing for NiteRider. "The affiliation will be extremely beneficial for both companies."
The contract takes affect May 15.
Says David Bowman, President of OGC: "We feel NiteRider and OGC are a very good fit, NiteRider being the premier designer and manufacturer of bicycle lighting systems, and OGC the distributor of premier bicycle accessories in Canada."
OGC, which is celebrating its 21st year, is the exclusive Canadian distributor of many of the biggest names in bicycling including Avocet, Camelbak, Delta, Gary Fisher, Greg LeMond, Fi:zi'k, Graber, Hayes, Kryptonite, Mavic, Northwave, OGC, Pedro's, Profile, Speedplay, Syncros, Vittoria/Geax, Answer/Manitou and now, NiteRider.
The company expects to be shipping NiteRider product from both its Montreal and Vancouver warehouses starting around the third week in May.
In addition, OGC will be handling warranty issues for all of Canada and will support NiteRider at many Canadian 24 hour races.
Other OGC news: One of our favourite marketing people - Nina Burke, of OGC - has had a daughter, Leah. Congratulations to Nina (and hurry back, so we can start bugging you for review stuff again...).
Canadian Cyclist News
We have a couple of announcements to make. First, we are pleased to announce that we will be providing the websites for the National Road Championships, Bromont World Cup Downhill, Masters Mountain Bike World Championships, Poley Mountain Canada Cup and the Whistler International Classic (and possibly a few others that haven't been confirmed yet). All websites will provide event schedules, accommodation info, maps, etc. Plus, of course, on site, live reporting. In addition, we will be offering online, SECURE event registration for these events by Visa credit card.
The first of these sites will be going up by the end of the weekend (Poley Mountain). Others will follow within a week or two. (Note: other event organizers who wish to use our services, please contact us at rjones@canadiancyclist.com )
Our second announcement is related: we will begin offering selected cycling products over the internet, starting with an astounding collection of over 75 cycling videos, ranging from mountain bike to road, from BMX to Extreme Downhilling (how about a complete set of Worlds videos for Alison Sydor's '94 to '96 victories, or the 1993-94 Track Worlds...). We will be extending this collection to include other unique, hard-to-find items, such as cycling jewelry, books, etc. We want to state, up front, that we do NOT expect to replace the bicycle retailer. We will carry the sort of items that retailers do not. This means that we want to find out from you what you want to see - post your comments in the Forums.
Finally, we are updating some computer hardware (for when Rob's on the road!), so we have a couple of laptops for sale:
Macintosh 1400c - 48 Mb RAM, 133 Mhz, 2 Gb hard drive. CD and floppy drives, Fax/Modem, AV card and extra battery. $1500.
Toshiba 110CS - Pentium 100, 16 Mb RAM, 810 Mb hard drive. External CD, Fax/Modem. $1000.
