Gary Lund Classic, B.C.
Sunday was the Gary Lund Classic Road Race in Sooke BC. Great day, challenging course, lots of sunshine and about a 30km head wind! Thanks to all the bike shops - Physical Culture, Oak Bay Bikes, Fort Street Cycles, The Bike Cellar, Performance Cycles, & Sooke Cycle & Surf - for supporting this race and making it possible. Thanks to Sidney Velos & The Victoria Wheelers for all your volunteers. And thanks to the racers for coming out & providing some exciting racing!

The first novice event of the year saw a record 26 entries with no less than 4 rider coaches and a number of the Wednesday regulars having a "rest" day. The format was the same as last year, with the riders divided into 4 teams.
Rider coaches Jeff Archbold & Mike Ybanez form Mississauga B.C., Jet Fuel's Matt Hansen And Neil Ross from Earls took their respective teams for a few preliminary laps to develop some cornering skills, the the race proper started with the first four laps ridden together to give the new riders a taste of bunch riding.
After the end of lap 4, the strong north east wind began to take its toll and the less fit and experienced started to string out behind the main group, which remained at 12 strong for the rest of the race. Drew Robinson of Earl's moved out on his own for the final five laps and finished 49 seconds up on Matt Chater, Boyd's Racing, with Green Line's Walter Gabovac taking the bunch sprint for 3rd. place 4 seconds further back.
Of note were Tina Mayberry's 5th. Place and cadet Ryan De Boer finishing in the pack in ninth place.
OCA Vice President and ORC Chair, Ralph Neumann also graced us with his presence but his lack of fitness showed as he struggled in, well back from the action.
Thanks to Schwinn Canada for merchandise prizes and to the Mississauga club who came out in force to support the race.
