The CCA will run an Olympic Track Assessment camp on October 30 and 31 to provide an opportunity for athletes to achieve the standards to participate in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Track Plan. Assessment will be in timed events only. The camp will take place at the Burnaby Velodrome, with a pre-registration deadline of October 22. Registration should be sent via email to the National Team Training Centre ˆVictoria to the attention of Louise Hodgson-Jones at lhjones@pacificsport.com.
The time standards defined in Schedule B are based on an analysis of times posted at World Cup and World Championship events and must be met in order to participate in the first two World Cups, keeping in mind the maximum number of entries Canada can enter in any given event. Zach Bell, Martin Gilbert, Gina Grain, Ryan McKenzie and Travis Smith, as athletes already in the performance pool, have been pre-selected to the first two World Cups in the events noted below and are not subject to assessment for those events at this camp, but nonetheless are strongly encouraged to attend.
Performance pool of athletes pre-selected to World Cup I and World Cup II
Zach Bell: Men's Points Race, Madison
Martin Gilbert: Madison
Gina Grain: Women's Points Race
Ryan McKenzie: Madison
Travis Smith: Men's Sprint, Keirin and Team Sprint
The performances at these two World Cups will determine participation and funding in the 3rd and 4th World Cups as well as in the World Championships. All standards are established to achieve Olympic medal success in Beijing.
Athletes who achieve the performance pool time standards and selection to the team for the first two World Cups (keeping in mind the maximum number of entries per nation) will receive full support of the CCA.
All athletes who are selected to the World Cup project must submit their yearly training plans and final detailed plans for October 2007 to March 2008. The CCA will work to respect these plans and will make every effort to consult with personal coaches. All plans will remain confidential. Athletes must also ensure that they take a medical and physical evaluation before their departure for Australia.
Team events (Team Sprint and Team Pursuit): CCA will support entry into these team events only if each team member achieves the appropriate individual time standards (see Schedule B).
