A Chat with Sue Palmer-Komar

At the Road Worlds last month in Salzburg, Sue Palmer-Komar indicated that this would probably be her last year at such an elite level. This seemed to be confirmed when Colavita/Sutter Home p/b Cooking Light announced their 2007 team and Palmer-Komar was missing from the roster.

However, it turns out that this was just while Palmer-Komar sorted out her plans for the next season, which do include returning to the squad on a flexible program.

"They didn't put my name on the team (when they announced the 2007 squad) because I hadn't signed with them yet. After some time at home I felt like I wanted to ride next year, but at the same time move into coaching and managing. The team is really good, and allowing me to do that."

"I want to learn more about it (managing), because as a rider you take it for granted, and I know there is so much involved. I want to look at opportunities in coaching as well (Palmer-Komar holds a degree in Exercise Physiology)."

Palmer-Komar hasn't sorted out which races she will be at next year, "If I'm ready for the spring (California) races, then I'll be there for sure. But this is going to be the first time I'll be in Canada all winter (for training), so I'll have to see if I survive! The team is being really flexible, and allowing me to set my own schedule."

"I won't be winning races so much, I don't think, but I can help Tina (Pic) win her races - I love leading her out; because you know she isn't going to let you down, she will win. I realized that I miss the girls on the team, and that I love being a part of that."

Palmer-Komar also is looking forward to riding with new team recruit Alex Wrubleski (Canadian national road and time trial champion). "That's kind of cool, especially with another Canadian - Stacy Spencer - riding for the team. Alex, she has so much talent ... it's going to be neat to see what she can do."
