Time Announces Voluntary Pedal Recall
Time Sport International has announced the voluntary recall of the TIME® RXS and TIME® RXE automatic pedals for road cycles. There is a potential safety issue affecting these models, which concerns the detachment of the axle system from the body of the pedal. As a precautionary measure, and in the interests of putting the safety of its consumers first, the company has decided to undertake a recall of all TIME® RXS and TIME® RXE pedals shipped between 1 October 2004 and 21 June 2006 and carry out the necessary inspections and corrections.
Road models affected by the recall
Automatic pedals (left and right) TIME RXE (white letters): steel axle, grey composite body
Automatic pedals (left and right) TIME RXS (red and white letters): steel axle, grey composite body
Automatic pedals (left and right) TIME RXS CARBON (red and white letters): steel axle, black carbon-strengthened composite body
Automatic pedals (left and right) TIME RXS TITAN CARBON (red and white letters): titanium axle, black carbon-reinforced composite body
Approximately 107,000 pairs of TIME® RXS and TIME® RXE pedals were shipped throughout the world between 1 October 2004 and 21 June 2006.
The MTB, CYCLO models and the new TIME® Road 2006/2007 models are unaffected. Since 21 June 2006, all TIME® RXS and TIME® RXE pedals have been corrected and are marked with an indelible GOLD dot situated on the cross on the underside of the pedal body.
Potential risk for consumers
In certain cases, it is possible that the axle system could become detached from the body of the pedal. This is due to the combination of two phenomena: the differential expansion of the materials when exposed to strong heat, (when transported in a vehible or when exposed to heat in a window), resulting in thread torque loss; the yielding of the plastic material. After the initial loosening of the bushing, and depending on the exertion of the cyclist, vibrations or the use of back-pedalling, there is a risk of the bushing working completely loose and the body detaching from the pedal axle. This could create an imbalance and cause the cyclist to fall.
Canada recall and correction procedures
Affected consumers are asked to stop using their cycles if fitted with one of these models, dismantle both pedals and then take them to the nearest Time retailer, who will send them to Cycles Lambert Inc. To find a retailer near you, go to: www.cycleslambert.com.
Cycles Lambert Inc. will perform the product inspections and corrections. Correction consists of securely fixing the axle bushing to the pedal body, thereby eliminating any risk of detachment. Corrected products will be marked with a SILVER dot and returned to their owners.
Retailers should contact Cycles Lambert to get a Return Authorization #.
