Germany's top medal hope in the cross-country, Sabine Spitz, is out of the mountain bike world championships on the first day of training after a crash resulted in a shoulder injury (left shoulder). Spitz was trying the technical log staircase called Sharka's Playground when she lost control, tumbling down the steep, log-strewn descent. The 2008 Olympic champion had only come back to top level competition less than a month ago after a shoulder injury early in the season - the right one - which required surgery. She became a favourite for the Worlds after winning the Andorra World Cup late last month. Now, she is out of the Elite women's cross-country and Germany will drop out of the favourites for the Team Relay.
